I know nothing about IDPA, but am thinking about it for CCW purposes stateside. What pistol limitations are out there? I'd like to use a 1911, but prefer an extended slide release as a southpaw. I think I'd get an inside the pants holster.

Deckard,
Extended slide release is good to go with the caveat that it must still fit in the box. I ran with a Norc NP30 for a couple of years and was completely legal.....I now have a STI Spartan that I use in CDP and love it

You cannot use an extended slide release in ESP or CDP on your 1911. The list of non-legal modifications is not an inclusive list. Robert Ray has advised no extended slide releases in ESP or CDP. I will be contacting Mr. Ray tomorrow regarding the Norinco model that comes with the extended slide release.

Chosing a pistol for IDPA is pretty much left up to the shooter's personal likes provided they fall within the Divisions restrictions. Try an number of pistols and go with what you like. Some work well in IDPA but may or may not be the best for CCW in the US. (Weight and conceability comes into play).

Some of the more popular guns I see in matches include

Glocks, M&P's, 1911 both full size and Commander, sig's, CZ'sand their clones to name just a few.

Find what you like and go with it. Great sport and lots of fun.

The extended slide release is for me a southpaw necessity. If some rule says otherwise, then I should bow out even before I start.

Try a 1911 in your left hand and see how much fun it is to depress the slide release with the left finger.

Try it with your right hand for right handed shooters...

I am afraid the extended slide release on the 1911 for ESP and CDP is a no go.

Plenty of other pistols out there besides the 1911 for IDPA.

"It was asked on a if extended slide releases on CDP and ESP guns were legal. Robert Ray of IDPA's answer:

Sorry folks, the extended slide release is not on the inclusive list of approved modifications in CDP or ESP. There is a little wiggle room on width, but for extended I am referring to those that extend past and over the plunger tube housing. These most certainly would be a no go and would get a possible FTDR or DQ at the Nationals.

for me( and i'm a dedicated southpaw- left hand, left eye dom) it's no problem at all- i use a remington rand completely stock with the exception of the grips- i actually prefer the stock slide stop as the extended tends to "ride" up once in a while, causing a stoppage

The 1911 is a great pistol for IPSC, with a 10 round mag you're on the same level as all the other pistols. In IDPA you can only use 8 round mags (can not extend past the grip). Even if you have a double stack 1911 I think you can only load 8 rounds (have to check the division regs). Even though you are not competing directly against the SSP and ESP etc... divisions that can use double stack 10 round mags, I'd recomend thinking about a 9 or a 40 such as the ones Canuck44 mentioned. I recently moved form a Colt Series 80 to a SIG P226, I like the SIG much more for IDPA.

could run the double stack at 10 rounds in ESP or downloaded to 8 rounds in CDP

I'm not sure Bob asked the question on behalf of lefties, and got a generic 'No.' I think.

I was considering a LDA, but I value your suggestions, all. I might go for a K100, which goes forward when you seat the mag hard. I can't seem to make a SIG operate well as a lefty.

Have you looked at the cZ 85. It comes with ambi safety and ambi slide lock release. I had one and loved it. Very accurate and a very comfortable grip. The CZ's are very popular in IDPA and very competitive. Not all that expensive either.

Sorry.

SSP = Stock Service Pistol
ESP = Enhanced Service Pistol

In SSP modifications are quite limited. Essentially shooting the gun as it comes out of the box for mortals. The allowed modifications are set out in the rule book. Single Action pistols are not allowed in this division.

You can download the rule book here:

http://www.idpa.com

Just scroll down to near the bottom of the page.

The Divisions are listed there with what is allowed and not allowed. Please note the allowed modifications are an inclusive list while the non-legal modifications are a NON-INCLUSIVE list.

I just got off the phone with Robert Ray at IDPA HQ. The NP 30 with the extended slide release has been ruled illegal for IDPA. Owners of the gun can change out the slide stop to a regular size slide stop and the gun would be deemed legal for use in either ESP or downloaded to 8+1 rds and shot in CDP. I am told it makes weight for both divisions.

Take care
