Hey all
I am new to this site found it though my instructor
I currently have restricted and none restricted and just passed wilderness course which will get me closer to ATC permin
I am also doing prospecting so that hances the authorization to Cary for safety reason
Question is they recommend at least 357 pistol and a friend of mine gave me a.45 question is since I know very little about the power and penetration I would like some advice if the 45 auto is sufficient if I encounter a bear
I know I will need flat nose ammo but should I consider another gun that might be more suitable for bear encounters

Any help will be appreciated
thanks in advance

PS also wanted to know if there are posts here for people are selling their pistols

The bigger the better. My minimum choice would be a 44 magnum revolver.

Or if I needed something smaller then my 6 1/2" barrel model 29.

If I encountered a bear & had to get into a shooting situation, I would want as much power as possible. 44 magnum or more. If you have to go with a 45 auto then make sure that you get good ammunition. High speed hollow points would be my suggestion. Avoid the standard 230 grain round nose.
How fast can you run ?

A cannon is good

:p Just kidding

Welcome to CGN

Anything that will stop him in his steps, like a cannon. Mind you, a little heavy:p

FYI, some of it has been covered on this thread. Check it out.

All kidding aside, welcome to CGN and enjoy your stay with us. I am sure you will love it.

Welcome to CGN!

Good on you for getting your ATC. Alot of people here will envy you because of it.

My suggestion would be the Smith & Wesson 500 Magnum...Go big or you might not make it home.

The biggest most powerful handgun you can shoot accurately and are prepared to carry. I am personally a fan of .45 Colt loaded with heavy bullets, that doesn't make it the best gun/cartridge for you.

Are you willing to carry the weight, and are you willing to practice ??

I carry a 45 ACP because I am willing to hump it around, and the recoil is mild enough to practice a lot.

I've got to disagree with this statement. 230 FMJ's is exactly what I'd use against bears if .45ACP is all I had available. A half inch wound channel right through the bear has got to be more effective at stopping a said creature than whatever a HP handgun round would do.

Taurus makes a very capable 5 shot double action revolver in 454 Casull, the Raging Bull.
It is compensated, which makes for better control, and you can use factory 45 Long Colt loads for practice and plinking.
PP.

all the guys that are recomending hollow-points are sadly misguided.

hp's are for thin skinned humans, this is what they are designed and tested for. they will simply break apart as they hit the skin of larger animals, and cause surface damage, but will fail to actually penetrate and break bones and cause internal damage. you need to anchor a bear, not cause skin damage.

you need penetration. any of you who hunt, have seen how animals don't know when they are dead, as they are not programmed by hollywood to fall over when they are shot. splattering hollowpoints across an angry bear probably is not your best bet.

Penetration, penetration is all I have to say. (like a high school ### ed teacher). .45 bullet is already plenty wide enough. It's getting in and doing some damage. But yes high quality ammo.

7.62x25TT Tokarev pistol...in the eye.
Bring a big slow fat friend you can out run, and make sure his backpack holds the hotdogs. :D

I would advise against the standard .45acp. If you do have to carry the .45, stick with swc 200grains or over. I found the round nose factory fmjs lacking(I did testing on heavy bone/gelitain ect ect). If you want to go with a reasonably sized autoloader and factory ammo, go with a 10mm, and 180-200grain fmj flat points.

A ruger revolver in .454 casul would be ideal, you can use .45colt to practice, and even to use for protection ammo. 300grains of lead at 1200fps for warm .45colt loads vs 230 grains at 850fps for .45acp.

Talk to Gunnar at Armco if you are set on using your .45 - the link can be found at the top of the forums. IIRC he deals with a lot of wilderness carry clients. One of the things that he markets is .45-08 brass for hi-pressure loads, I presume out of a regular 5" .45 ACP barrel. He mentioned 200gr slugs at 1500fps, which is in the region of .44 magnum performance.

To answer your last question, yes, there is an exchange forum that you will have to apply to join.

No, high speed hollow points would be the worst choice in .45acp. Bear is much more heavily built then people, and the bones are thicker. Few hollow points will penetrate well on anything other then small black bear. This may be the one case where your best off with 230 grn hardball. Just about any other caliber in this range would be a better choice though, .357 with 158 SWC or 44mag with 240-300 grn hard cast would be better if you could deal with the recoil, 45 colt warmed up a bit if you can't.
