The problem is answered more by a combination of penetration and control, and less about power. A .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum or .45 Colt are probably recognised as the most appropriate tools. The .45 ACP lacks penetration, so would not appear on my list. Loads should employ flat nose or truncated cone bullet, heavy for caliber, non expanding for maximum straight line penetration, and should be loaded to 1000 - 1200 fps.
Cartridges which are designed for hunting handguns such as the .475 Linebaugh, or the various .500's, have too much recoil for a fast repeat shots which may occur in a dangerous bear confrontation. Barrels longer than 6" tend to get in the way when you are working, and are slower to bring into action.
Either DA or SA revolvers have their merits and weaknesses. I prefer a SA because I believe the swing out cylinder is a weaker system, but I recognize that my follow up shots may not be as fast as they would be from a DA gun.
The holster needs to protect the gun, carry it securely, yet provide quick access to it when needed. I prefer to wear the gun high on the strong side when wearing light clothing, in a rig which holds the gun tight to my body. This way my arm is not constantly bumping it.
