Playing with the Ruger BX-Trigger

hey Way, best place to buy a Kidd Stage 1 trigger for my SR-22?

Fabsports out of QC get orders in almost monthly (or have been historically) and Dlask but they seem to take a while to get stuff in once they are sold out.
JoBrooks use to carry them but have fallen off the map.

only 3 places i have seen Kidd stuff up here in Canada over the last 5-7 years.

wayupnorth Have you tried the KIDD Trigger Job Kit yet. Dlask sells it. If you tried it, what are your thoughts?

i have not.
i went with the Volquartsen one and its nice - id assume the Kidd one is the same.

well hell, lets compare them!

the Kidd trigger job comes with a Hammer, trigger blade, sear and disconnect.
trigger blade has a over travel screw on it.

VQ one comes with the same - Hammer, trigger blade, sear and disconnect (trigger blade has over travel screw in it as well) and also comes with some shims and also a plunger and spring (polished) and a bolt buffer.
you can get a upgraded HP kit as well that has the auto bolt release in it and the extended mag release.
Kidd also offers the same off their web page but not at Dlask.

Kidd does offer a 'spring package' so you can tune your springs to the weight you want.... but i dont see those offered anywhere up here.

both trigger jobs essentially are the same.
both say your trigger will go down to 2-2.5lbs which is said to be the ideal weight for a 10/22.

i put my VQ HP Action Plus kit in my 1984 10/22 and it is a super nice upgrade, my trigger is now 2.11lbs.

end of action report:
id say they are the same.

sorry, price.

Kidd (at Dlask) $160
VQ (when i got mine from P&D) $147 (i added a few more kits onto it but this was the basic HP action kit price)

so same price really.

Ruger is such an ahole for that lawyer approved factory trigger that's only good for finger blisters. Sound like BX should be std and with auto bolt release mod done.

Got VQ drop in for my SR22 several yrs back when they were $149USD with ER near par. Couldn't do 25 shoot grouping with factory but with the VQ crisp, light pull 25 was easy.
...
so ya, super neat changes.
im impressed with the trigger, more than i thought i would be.
really though, at the end of the day its no Kidd or VQ or Timney or Brimstone but for a fraction of the price its a nice little trigger!
and when i think about it..... since they are not hand polishing and fitting these triggers why are these NOT in every 10/22 that comes off the line?
money, of course, but these should really replace the old triggers.

and one last thing - new BX trigger does not come with the auto bolt release mod done to it.
when will they learn.

As a result of this thread and a little reading on the internet I decided to check the BX triggers that we have in stock. By trying them without a gauge I could hardly tell the difference from the half dozen I sampled. The Ruger package indicates 2.5-3 lb trigger pull. Using a Lyman electronic trigger pull gauge the weight went from 2.12-3.15 lbs. I found most in 2.5 lb range. I tried five pulls with each trigger group and these were the average. As it turned out the lightest trigger measured was already mounted on a new gun we have for sale with a custom stock and scope mounted (I don't really know if the trigger group being mounted in the receiver had much to do with it other than the extra wear in that this trigger group received when we installed the trigger and tested it several times (with dummy rounds). Phil.

So this got me further thinking since I had the gun rest and gauge set up, I tested a few more 10-22 sample guns for comparison. Stock Ruger trigger in an older used gun...6.5 lbs. with lots of creep. New TacSol I gave my wife for Xmas (yeah right she knows it was mostly for me, red anodized and red laminated stock and super light with a fluted bull barrel)...2.10 lbs and no creep at all. AMT "Fly Swatter", stainless steel receiver, threaded screwed in bull heavy barrel...2.12 lbs with very little creep but due to the heavy over all weight it was to me the best feeling trigger. I had a complete older model Volquartsen build that I did for my daughter several years ago but didn't check this one as my daughter wouldn't give it back to check (I think she thought she might not see it again). Phil.

thanks for the leg work Phil!

to add to this, what the BX trigger is missing and should have to make it super nice would be a over travel screw.
the VQ and Kidd kits come with them and the full trigger systems dont need them as they are corrected internally, but i know my VQ one is so much nicer with that over travel screw in it so i only need like 2mm to reset the trigger instead of having to let the blade swing the full range.

if the BX had one of those in it i think it would have taken it to the next level.
could put one in but than your drilling plastic and threading plastic (if that is even possible)

Very good post! Thank you sir.

Looking at your photos Im fairly certain my VLEH, advertised to have the BX in it from factory, does not in fact have the BX.

I think I'll be doing another teardown and inspection. Kind of want a new trigger group anyways and it'll give me a reason to replace it. Haha

wayupnorth I'm looking for a colored trigger with adj. over travel screw, now where I can find one here in Kanada?

Hical carries Power Custom stuff, maybe they would have one or be able to order ya one, from their website they only look to have black in stock?
i know Brimstone Gunsmith adds them onto his work - maybe you can order one directly from him, i know he has all the colors cause i got mine in blue from him.
Questar has TI stuff listed including colored triggers but i dont think they have set screws in them.
granted any machine shop could drill it and tap it for ya.
hell, if your good with a drill you could do it yourself.

The description of this gun (VLEH) is somewhat misleading. The advertising states "unique two-stage target trigger features a short take-up stage, followed by a crisp, light target pull with no creep of over travel". I as well thought this would be the new BX trigger as it had just been introduced two years ago at a distributer show. I had to get through several Ruger executives at the show until I found the person in charge of the program (BX Trigger) that explained it was not a BX trigger but an "improved" trigger that he was not able to explain what had been done to it over the stock trigger. In fact we took a VLEH model that we set up with a TacStar stock and along with other add ons (for sale in the store) and replaced the stock trigger housing with a BX trigger vastly improving the feel and weight of the trigger pull from 7 lbs. to 2.12 lbs. I still have the original trigger assembly from the VLEH and can attest to the fact that it feels and looks exactly like any stock 10-22 trigger. It is disappointing that Ruger used some "smoke and mirrors" to confuse consumers on this model. I still believe that the VLEH model is the best model (heavy barrel, Hogue Over molded stock and adjustable bipod). I feel Ruger missed the boat on not including the BX trigger on the original specs of this gun and would have added little if any to the production cost. Phil.

I will get back to you as one of my guys wanted to buy it for a project. If I can find something else for him I will notify you. Phil.

Quite possible, you said it yourself, reversed engineered from aliens haha. Works great and has been in since 2012 and 10's thousands of rounds. Had I switched to a torsion bar before installing the stop I could have used the hole for the return spring but I discovered the mod long after. They sure make all the difference.

Had to run to the safe and check on my 10/22 after posting, I thought that was the worst safe kiss ever on the reciever, thank the sky fairies it was just the tech sight/reciever line.

I replaced it with a "torsion bar", it gives you better leverage on the spring whole it maintaining enough pressure to return. With the PC hammer, jb weld disconnect mod, torsion bar and over stop its a wickedly fast, crisp, creep free trigger for ~$40. Here's the picture of the torsion bar mod, not my pic.
