Both are made of sheet metal and the VZ is a slightly more "sophisticated"/modern design. Only the VZ can be brought to the range and it can be loaded using stripper clips.

No sorry not for me. It's not the question of shooting the AK that makes it more desirable. The AK is an icon where as the VZ is an "AK look alike"
AK's are easier to repair and maintain than the VZ

The AK is Desirable, yet un-obtainable to most Canadians. I have a fired a few AK variants, both in semi and fully automatic. Be interesting to see how streamlined the recoil is in the CZ-858 non-restricted.

You can't go plinking pop cans with your Prohib AK47 if your lucky enough to even get your hands on one.

The VZ has no sheet metal in it at all.

This whole thread is chock full of BS.

Ignoring prohib status and range use, comparing a milled AK47 to a VZ58, the VZ, in my opinion, is the better rifle. Comparing an AKM (the sheet metal AK) to a VZ, VZ58 wins hands down no contest. There is a reason the Czechs weren't forced to adopt the AK47 like all other Warsaw Pact nations. Even the Russians knew it was a better rifle.

MagunmPeanut, that was the cutest video ever.

I own and love a CZ858 but have never shot or held an AK. They sure look great. But my CZ is light, well balanced and accurate. When tacticooled, it's just an awesome rifle.

...and I can take it out whenever I want to.

I think his little guy did great, as long as dad is right there very close by...which he was.

Getting an early start on learning the fundementals of firearms safety is a good idea when it comes to kids. He will no doubt remember his range day, and pass his good fortune and safe handling on to your grand kids...

Hahaha.....Superior? It's just a matter of time before YOU can't take that to the range either. Then who's stuck with a nicer paper weight? Humm??

well then i'll pm you and you can let me know what i shoulkd be doing with it, as you are experienced in the world of paperweight firearms.

Send them all my way. We will bury them in a sealed box packed in grease and wait and pray for day when a government that understands us is elected majority. Might not be in our lifetime though.

ak vs vz

I would like to make a comparisson of my own even if all I could do is hide the ak in a deep dark corner never to see the light of day. Until then I will keep an open mind and a ready pvc.

I did a bit of research there are very few AK Bashing threads atleast in the past 3 years.

Anyway the big deal is that the cz 858 is a military style rifle which is accessible to many shooters due to its legal classification and low price point.

If you like an sks better well good for you. There are 1000s of folks who like the sks as well.

I've fired thousands of rounds through AKM's, semi and full-auto. I've fired thousands of rounds through CZ858's.

The CZ is lighter, more accurate, more ergonomic, has less recoil, and is no less reliable or durable than an AK.

I like them both, I prefer the CZ.

X2 what Bryce said!

Milled steel for the Czech rifle compared to stamped sheet metal for the "modern" AKM. Better fit and finish, even when compared to Russian rifles. I love the AK, but the VZ-58/CZ-858 beats it hands down in the accuracy department and in a much lighter package to boot.

I've got plenty of friends in the US who have paid $1000USD for a VZ-58, when they could've purchased 2-3 AKs for the same price and they are hard-core AK lovers.

Having fired/owned both, the VZ-58 is IMHO the better rifle. However, the AK has a mystique all its own and when added to the fact that we now have an entire generation of new shooters who can never own a functioning AK, the unobtainium factor makes it very appealing.:)

Have shot both, own a vz, i'd have to say the i prefer my vz. Shot both a mak90 and a wasr10 and they where fun guns, but they where not the most acurate and where heavier than my vz. Only thing i did't care for with my vz ws the plastic empregnated stock, which i replaced with a wood stock set. As far as asthetics go i would say fit and finish was way better on my vz than the wasr10 and a bit better than the mak90. If they wheren't prohibited would a get one? hell ya, is it going to happen anytime soon? Probably not. Till then i'll shoot my vz and should ak's ever be de-prohibited i'll still keep my vz.

I disagree...there is a small piece of sheet metal serving as a dust cover over the main spring.

But I do agree with you about the

I don't own an AK, although I have a fair number of friends who do and I have put a few hundred rounds through them. It's a good gun for what it does.

The CZ is also a good rifle. It is certainly more accurate and better built than all of the AKs I have personally handled, although I have never used one with a milled receiver.

The AK in Canada is for the collector. It is effectively a large, heavy, hard to transport baseball card.

The CZ is for the shooter.

I am not a collector. If and when AKs become usable I will consider them, although I have no particular desire to replace my CZ with one.

IMO the only disadvantage to the CZ is the mags which are a bit flimsy. Everything else is better.

Well, that and the pistol grip is sized for a five year old girl and needs to be replaced if you have more than two fingers on your strong hand. But that is a cheap fix.
