After years of hearing stories of my grandfather hunting BC bears in Quesnel with his old 30-06 I've finally found some useful information to hopefully track it down. Going through some of his old paperwork from the early 90's we found a list of his firearms and the serial numbers! It's a M-17 in 30-06, Winchester made in Nov 1918, serial number 469425. Should have 3 file marks on the bottom of the trigger guard. Pretty sure it's sporterised. He went a little senile in his later years and sold a bunch of his stuff for next to nothing and this rifle was one of those things. It would have been sold in the early to mid 90's in the area of Lumby/Vernon and possibly Quesnel BC

I know it's a crazy long shot to find this thing, could well have been turned in and destroyed many years ago! If you have a rifle matching this description please check your serial number for a match!

Here's a pic of my mom and uncle in 1959 with a bear shot by my grandfather's rifle. This particular bear had mauled a calf the night before.
Thank you.

I'm not in a position to help, but wish you the best of luck finding your grandfathers rifle.

He was living in Lumby at the time so I doubt it but anything is possible.

only reason i ask is i know of a guy locally who has one . i remember him saying that he got it off of a old guy that took really good care of it .
he would have gotten it around the same time as your time line ........ next time i see him i'll ask him about it anyway just in case .

That would be awesome if you could find out! I know the original owner was in Quesnel a guy by the name of Johnny Williams who I'm told has long since passed away.

Just looked: not here.

I know what you are trying for, friend, and I wish you all the luck in the world.

My grandfather was a fur-trader at the HBC post at Fort Edmonton before the Great War. He had a .22, a CF rifle or 2 and a good shotgun, but his wife didn't like guns in the home with little kids.... so he got rid of them. I would give ANYTHING to have one of Grandpa's guns...... but they were sold off about 90 years ago.

Good luck.

perhaps our gloreous CFC may be able to help. Serial # should be there if it was registered at any time. I do not know if they can give names but maybe an area to look for it.

Best of luck! I bought my Dad's BSA M17 50 years after he traded it in on a TV, but I knew where it was the whole time. Just a matter of waiting.

I'd love to get it back but I'd also be happy just to see some pictures of it and know it still exists (as long as it has a good home) I just hope it hasn't been terribly bubba'd or melted down by some terrible person!
