Please help find my grandfathers M-17 (P17) enfield!

The U.S.A. designation is M1917 and some people will insist it's the only correct one, but rifles actually used in Canadian or British service are just as correctly called what Canadian or British called them i.e. P-17, consistent with the designation for the .303British version, P-14.

The Model 1917 Enfield manufactured in the US in 30-06 is exactly that, a "Model" 1917. They were never labelled "Pattern" 17 or P 17. The British Enfield rifles are referred to as Pattern 13 and Pattern 14's. Far too many people don't know the difference and as time goes on, more and more individuals label them incorrectly.

Some M1917 rifles were supplied to Canada and U.K. in WWII. I have read that the ones in Canada tended to be used by the RCAF for guards on bases and that the ones in U.K. were mostly issued to Home Guard units. Training manuals and other documentation call them P17.
