Please Help ME! 9mm or .40S&W?

I'm buying a S&W M&P, really can't decide on 9mm or .40S&W

I already have 2 9mm pistols with all the associated reloading eqpt. Bullet molds etc. 1000's of 9mm brass.

I'd like it for everything from plinking to target and steel poppers.

Should I stay with 9mm and enjoy all the equipment I already have or move up to 40S&W and bankrupt myself with more molds, dies, sizers etc?

I must add that I'd like to go progressive and the loadmaster can be bought with the .40S&W setup. Whereas if I go 9mm with the press, I'd get another set of 9mm dies that I don't need.

I'm kinda leaning to the .40 side........

Please help, I'm loosing sleep over this!!

Go .40. Listen to your instincts. You didn't get into this to save a pile of cash and you already know 9mm so keep it fresh and be adventurous in your poverty. By the way this is a great thread. I didn't think there'd be this much controversy re 9mm vs .40. Having a .45 Kimber I was looking at a nice .40 in consideration of trying IPSC. I'm going to start another thread and ask advice on that application vs 9mm.

I would agree with you 100% - Beautiful piece (like art)... I was torn between it and the P229SAS I ended up getting :)

Gratz!!

I'd skip .40 and go .45ACP. In the 1911 platform I find .45 a real pleasure to shoot, whether hot or mild. I'm not a fan of "snappy" recoil :)

I don't understand the "snappy" recoil you mention. Can you explain?

I've been looking at one of these at Reliable Guns in Vancouver. Unfortunately today nuzzled against it was a Para "Todd Jarret" model that gave me that old feeling as well. Best to lay back and ponder awhile.

Well, I've found that hot 9mm and .40's (though I've only shot a few of the latter) tend to "snap" the barrel up whereas the 1911 in .45 ACP seems to "push back", at least in my experience - I also find the Fat Boys more accurate - but that could be the bigger hole in the target :)

I'm always cost conscious, so I'm gonna side with the 9mm. Then again, I'm too old to deploy, so a 9mm wins again. Anything to do with 9mm, my wife always gives me the green light (her 1911 9mm needs feeding, too) for primers, bullets more powder. Besides, I'm only punching paper. No need for minor or major 'considerations' in Service Pistol (military & operational training) , so the 9mm works for us.

Go with what works for you budget and your logistics. And if my buddies call me girlie, then maybe I should apply to be a LEO in order to fill their hiring quotas. yuk yuk yuk. ;)

If your in Winnipeg.
send me a pm.
I might be able to find some time to go to the range and you can try
the glock And Xd in 40 a sig in 9 and 19ll in 45 .then you can decide for yourself.
regards

The 9 offers many advantages :
If factory ammo is used , the 9 is cheaper .
if reloading , the bullets and brass are a little cheaper . Powder also goes farther .
As far as the IPSC / MP goes , your in production division and it only scores minor . Major need not apply .
As far as recoil goes its a wash . Factory loads in both calibers kinda snap to me . As for reloads you can reduce either caliber to a pussy cat . light 9mm 147 grain reloads are about the same recoil as light 40 cal 180 grainers .
As for seeing the hole better , in IPSC , you should be able to call your shots . Meaning when you touch off a round you should already know where it went . Or thats how I understand it anyway .
That said , I shoot a .45acp ( due to be upgraded to .40 ) in standard and just bought a 40 for production ( price was right ) .

In a perfect world...Some of us are still learning:rolleyes:

Pitdogboy , I couldn't agree more .
I didn't say I mastered it .
But I am working on it . The theory is still valid though IMO , If your looking for holes thats costing time - you should " know " they're there .
