I'm buying a S&W M&P, really can't decide on 9mm or .40S&W

I already have 2 9mm pistols with all the associated reloading eqpt. Bullet molds etc. 1000's of 9mm brass.

I'd like it for everything from plinking to target and steel poppers.

Should I stay with 9mm and enjoy all the equipment I already have or move up to 40S&W and bankrupt myself with more molds, dies, sizers etc?

I must add that I'd like to go progressive and the loadmaster can be bought with the .40S&W setup. Whereas if I go 9mm with the press, I'd get another set of 9mm dies that I don't need.

I'm kinda leaning to the .40 side........

Please help, I'm loosing sleep over this!!

Unless you have a real reason to go to the 40, why not save yourself a lot of money & stay with the 9mm.
I find that the 40 has a sharp recoil & the 9mm is a lot more enjoyable to shoot.

9mm. Except for specialized needs, 40 is the transvestite caliber - can't decide if it wants to be a 9 or a 45. if you want to move "up", move to 45acp.

That's what the exchange forum is for.

"...get another set of 9mm dies that I don't need..." Most progressive presses use the same dies you have now.
"...bankrupt myself with..." Your option is factory ammo. That'll bankrupt you faster.

I have always thought why bother with a 9mm? Go with the .40 and than if you reload, adjust your loads as you like from soft to hard recoil. That's what I do, lot's of flexibility, lot's of fun.

Is there any optional barrel, and mag kit you could get for it so you could simply swap out the barrel and mags for another caliber if you felt like it? :)

I got dies for .45 and went with a 1911 (Tanfoglio Witness)..OMG, couldn't be happier!. I figured going from my 9mm to 10 (40) wasn't much of a difference....felt like I needed a bigger difference in caliber....my thoughts anyway.

.40 can be shot in major though..and the scoring favours major...........no:confused:

Stay with 9mm, I have 3 Nines (including M&P!) and zoro .40's. I like reloading one calibre and than being able to shoot in it any gun you have :)

I just bought an M&P40....and I love it.....I have one other pistol and its in 9mm....I love both .....I think it depends on $$$$$ you want to spend....

Someone at an IPSC match advised against .40 and to stay with the 9mm - apparently not enough umph to make it into major. The nice thing about some .40's is that you can often use a .357SIG barrel in the same frame with no modifications. My Glock 22 and SIG 226 each have .357SIG barrels. However......... .357SIG rounds are expensive and hard to get, but they shoot real nice!
