I am currently eyeing 3 guns, all similar price range

1: Colt King Cobra .357 6"" barrell
2: S/W 686 6"barrell .357
3"Ruger GP100 .357 6"barrell

i am partial to the king cobra as it is nickel as opposed to being stainless finish.

can anyone please enlighten me on the differences of the threee ans what would you pick and why
?

I shot all 3 before buying and I got a 686. I prefer stainless to nickle, and found the 686 action to be the smoothest of all. The 686 I fired was a 686-3, and I bought the same model. People tell me the Colt is more delicate than the other 2. The Ruger is TOUGH, but needs some serious work on it's trigger. Hope this helps and good luck!

686 S&W can't go wrong!!!!!!!!!

good advice guys.
my question is WHY
im not second guessing your advice i just would like to know what makes the SW superior.
Im bedazzled by the KC nickle finish

I prefer nickel finish too. My vote goes for the Colt.

I shot the Ruger and the S-W before and i did like both. Never shot a Colt King Cobra but seen it at the range many times. A really nice revolver. And when you get a Colt you buy a piece of history as well.

My first revolver purchase is most likely going to be a Ruger GP100, hopefully with a 4.2" barrel, and most likely stainless. My reasons for that are, no matter where you look at on the net for reviews of Ruger handguns, they don't win beauty contests (mind you I think the GP100 is gorgeous) but they're built to last. That and Ruger has made the effort to bring a restricted short barreled revolver to Canada (and other locations State-side). And that they've made that effort for the consumers brings them pretty much to the top of the list for me ^.^

That and the price point. $600+ for the 6" and a bit more for the 4.2" (one would think the short barreled would cost less, less material, but supply and demand eh @.@) while the S&W though excellent and well proven, a tad out of my price range >< and you can't get a barrel length shorter than 6", other than 'smithing it shorter, which adds more money... that and I'd feel like I'm committing an act of sacrilege by cutting something so beautiful @.@

I have the S&W.
I have also shot the Ruger many times.
That being said, I prefer the 686 over the gp100. They both feel alike in the hand but the main reason is the trigger. I find it breaks much smoother in the 686. (not just because i own it either) Good luck on your search.

I had a GP=100 and had a trigger job done to it. After the trigger job it was way better than at least 2 of my clubs regulars 686's. The Ruger is a more robust gun, and comes in the 4.2 inch barrel which is really nice. I think that if you plan on shooting mostly .357 the Ruger is the way to go. You will find that the price difference in the guns new will pay for the trigger job on the Ruger.

I forgot to mention that the last time that I was at Ellwood Epps, I took a look at the Ruger. Very nice gun but the trigger on it was far from smooth. I was very interested in getting the Ruger but the factory trigger work turned me off completely.

I would go with a 686, sweet trigger and accurate. I recently aquired a 686-6 5" 7 shot(Epp's has two in stock)and it is the most accurate handgun I have ever fired. The GP100 is a bit cheaper but it's a heavier gun with a heavier trigger. No comment on the Colt as I have never fired one.

The King Cobra was never made w/nickle finish, Colt mfg. stoped making the nickle finish in 1984-1985, starting in 1985 the stainless replaced the nickel in all the revolver line up. The King Cobra was first made in 1986 and they were available in brushed stainless, bright stainless or royal blue finish.

I've personnaly owned three S&W 586/686 and four KC in all finishes available. Now, I now only have one of them, I kept the Colt King Cobra in Bright Stainless. This is by far the only .357 magnum revolver that comes close to my beloved Colt Python in term of accuracy, trigger and overall fit and finish.

S&W 686's are very good revolvers dont get me wrong, but it's not in the same league as a Colt King Cobra.

My Bright Stainless KC is now for sale, I'll only keep my Python as I shoot mostly my service pistol in 9mm, and will use the Python for some bulleye matches once or twice a year with my partner. He will not see a lot of action, it's a safe queen and will stay that way.

Harry, i think you know how im leaning ;)
