What is the best cal for point blank zero for deer with little hold over at 500 yards. Please help settle this bet with a buddie! I will not give my thoughts on this, I want him to read yours!

Gatehouse is on the button... Not too many calibers you can hold dead on from 0 to 500... That's a tall order!

Cheers
Jay

-7mm Imperial magnum, loaded hot with a high B.C., low drag bullet?
-408 Chey Tac
-Something cooked up by J.D.Jones & SSK Industries
The point is: That a few will do it, but I would think most are proprietary cartridges or wildcats...

How about a Lazzeroni 6.53 Scramjet, seems to scoot along pretty good with an 85gr bullet, but still won't give you a deer sized point blank to 500yds.

I had a customer insist that he shoots moose at 1000 yards with .375 H&H. I guess with a small hold-over that will work fine...;)

I'll chime in and say its impossible given our current technology. I just ran the numbers for a .338 Lapua and a .50 BMG, and the .338/300 gr Sierra was 17" low at 500 and the .50/647 gr Barnes was 20" low. Hey, what about the .408 CheyTac? Well, with the 419 gr bullet the .408 was 11" low at 500.

Alright...That's two out
Did Mr. Jones break that feat?

A 6mm-284 will get an 85 grain bullet to 3700-3800 fps. Still won't work for zero to 500 yards with point blank on a deer's vitals. Something like a 257 STW, 257WSM will probably shoot a 100 grain bullet this fast as well.

The bigger boomers that some have mentioned only start to shine with VLD's and distances over 500 yards or so. The lighter bullets being pushed by an overbore cartridge as mentioned above will have a flatter trajectory out to 500 yards for sure.
