Polar Bear with Husqvarna M46 in 9.3x57

Is it true polar bear liver is toxic and will actually kill sleigh dogs if eaten? Read something to that effect one time or other...............Harold

Yes, the liver is toxic.
And the polar bear meat that I have eaten had the texture of pork, and tasted as if it had been marinated in cod liver oil. Not toxic, but an acquired taste.

I couldn't do it. As fun as shooting and hunting are, there are some animals that I would find too beautiful to shoot like big cats or polar bears. I hate to be "one of those guys", but I don't see the point if you're not going to eat it (maybe you are, I dunno).

Not all types of hunting are for everyone... there are some types of hunting that I have little desire to participate in, but this is the hunting forum and that opinion served with a heaping side dish of judgement are rarely appreciated.

P.S - saying nothing and moving along is an option.

Nice bear! Congrats...

I haven't worried much about velocity since I shot my chronograph at the range a few years ago... I shoot for an accurate hunting load with a good hunting bullet design... then call it a day.

Would it make you feel all better inside if he ate it? This idea of "Its morally wrong to kill something if you dont eat it" is rather close minded and one should probably inform themselves on the benefits that come along with trophy hunting. This is probably the wrong place to be voicing those kind of opinions.

Did I say it was "morally wrong"?

And in MY OPINION, it's not closed minded to think that you shouldn't kill something if you don't eat it. Saying that this is the "wrong place to be voicing those kind of opinions" sounds pretty close-minded to me, like "you don't belong here", how Conservative of you. It's an internet forum for discussion, not threats. Also, I'm aware of the benefits that come with trophy hunting in Africa for example, but there are no areas in Canada where a healthy population of polar bears is being maintained for the purpose of hunting. My apologies for exciting your sensitivities, I'll try not to anger you in the future.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep in in mind as I roam the ####ING INTERNET. I didn't judge, was simply surprised that it's legal for non-natives to hunt polar bears. I've never encountered a group of people with such sensitive feelings.

Maybe you or the guy in the quote above could have done the intelligent thing and explained what the deal is like Tiriaq did instead of telling me that it's better not to post here. Jesus.

I might as well say it as someone will sooner or later; ever set a mouse or a rat trap? How'd that taste? Oh you didn't eat that? So you're saying there are some animals it's ok to kill and not eat but others it's wrong to kill and not eat? Sure sounds like you are judging to me.

Did anyone ask for your opinion, angry little man?

Feel free to keep your judgmental attitude to yourself next time.

oh man....all those gophers I forgot to eat and coyotes and wolves......some things you eat and some you let nature enjoy the full benefit of the kill.....its even organic and gluten free....

...there was a pic of a Nazi u-boat with one on the deck...Harold

There's an amazing book out about a Nazi weather station in the islands in the HIGH arctic, above 80 degrees north. They mention the incident I think you're talking about. It is a FANTASTIC book. If I recall correctly it's called "War above 80" or something like that. Google variations of that and it'll pop up. I bought my copy on greEdBay and recommend it highly.

Congratulations! Nice bear! Baffin between Clyde and Pond is getting up there, so it couldn't have been a very inexpensive adventure. Curious to know how much daylight you had for hunting, what the temperatures ran, and if the hunt was solely with dogs or was supported with snowmobiles. Finally, will he be a rug or a mount?
