Police surplus P1's

Yup, Tradex. At that price it comes with one mag and no holster or cleaning kit. I have bought a few rifles from them and have a Lanber 12 guage O/U shotgun on the way. They are very conservative in their gradeing, all of my guns have been in better shape than they described them. highly recomended.

P1 - very comfortable in hand. Some of the frame is made by alloy and it's light. Overall is well made - most of them are refurbish. Accuracy - medicre. Mine needs hot load to function well. For the price - it is still a good deal.

My P1 wasn't a refurbish, it had a lot of holster wear but it was like new inside. Could I leave well enough alone? No, I had it K-Coated and bought it a nice set of Wood Hogue grips. Regards, Richard:D

I just checked out their site.. looks like "antiques roadshow" came to town.
nothing of interest for me.

Well, I read this post and was compelled to order one of these as well. I ordered it on Monday morning, February 12 and received it, shipped from Quebec to BC, Friday afternoon, February 16th. Count me impressed with the shipping speed! :D The packaging was very secure, and required extensive stabbing and slicing from my Microtech Socom Elite to open. I guess I paid $15 for the packaging, since the shipping cost noted on the package was $9-something, and my charge was $25. That's about what I expected to pay, though, and as quickly as it got here I'm not gonna complain.

My P1 has fairly minimal finish wear, as I would expect from any time spent in a holster. There are a few small scratches on the plastic grips, and the finish is worn off just a handful of the sharp edges. The internal steel parts are all excellent. The aluminum frame shows finish wear on the typical contact surfaces (rails, magwell, feed ramp, trigger guard) that I would say is indicative of it having been used a fair amount, but not abused. I'd like to believe that a German Polizeioffizier used this gun to take out some deserving criminal scumbags. ;)

So far I'm really happy with this gun. It has alot of features not found on any of the other pistols I've owned to date. I haven't shot it yet, but I'm expecting I will remain much happier with it than I would be with a brand new Norinco of comparable value.

Accuracy of P 38 Pistols

It will definitively outlast many 9 mm's, but having had many P 38's through
my hands, the accuracy was never good in comparison with many
other 9 mm Pistols. Chinese 9 mm's will be far more accurate than the P 38.
I always liked them, yet the accuracy disturbed me, and 20 years ago I
rebarreled one with my own custom made 7.65 Luger barrel with 6" length.
A real blast and very accurate The barrel was cut off close to the frame,
rebored and threaded (NF). I sold it to BONGALIS LTD. and later was showing
up as a "Rare Prototype" P.38.
I was deeply unhappy, to say the least, but it was fun !

They are also very reliable, so much, that Beretta 92 copied the locking system.

I have three P38s and have found the accuracy to by very good. On the first one I bought I shot it before I bought it. Looking at the tight group of my 20 m target I couldn't say no. At a different time I was on our plate range (8" plates). I just got there and talked with one of our old bullseye shooters. He said I should shoot from the 50 m line. I laughed and said sure I'll try it. Bullseye stance at 50 m with a gun I had not sighted in with a bunch of reloads I had kicking around.

The trigger was very rough. I would aim pull on the trigger an hit a gritty spot, and stop but not let up on the trigger, put the gun down to 45 degrees, take a couple of breaths raise the gun, aim, pull on the trigger, and hit the next rough spot. It took three trys to get get it to break. Well the first shot knocked over the plate. :) Second shoot same thing. Third same. Of the eight shots loaded six plates were knocked over, only two misses. Not bad I would say. :D

My second and third P38 have much better triggers than the first. I hope to clean up the first when I get time.

I should have specified what I meant under very good accuracy.
In my case those were all military P 38's , and can not vouch for the
P-1 used later by the German Military.

The best I could obtain, was 4-5" at 25 Meters and only with 115 gr.
FMJ bullets. I experimented with all kinds of projectiles, cast ones included
I still would like to know with what kind of bullets/loads any one achieved
anything close to 2-3 inches at that distance.
I am really interested, and appreciate your input.

Just received mine, great shape, hope it shoots good. I notice the post war P1's have the steel recoil lug insert but the post war P38's don't seem to have them. Anyone know why this is?
