ok as some might remember i been working on a super tight budget 300wm precision/tactical rifle, based on a stevens 200. well i had completed it and range tested it and had some issues with the scope base. well now that i have sorted them out i will be re building it but with a little more $$ invested. with many thanks going to CGN member Snapshot for agreeing to sell me a Choate USS he has the stock is getting swapped around the end of the month. i will be replacing the factory barrel with a schillen drop in savage barrel in #8 contour chamber for 300wm. putting an SSS recoil lug on at the same time.* around mid april. soooo now heres my dilema. i cant very well put this fine piece of steel in a wally world special case for transport. soooooo i have to get a decent case now afetr surfing for many days looking at the options available for the higher end of cases i have narrowed it down to either a pelican 1750 or a starlight 061352. so what is the opion of the guys who know. let me here the pro's and cons

In my opinion, unless you will be shipping your rifle around the country by plane or train, don't waste your money on a big heavy expensive case. I'm assuming you're going from the gunsafe to the car/truck to the bench or mound at the range, then back home again. If so, the heavy case isn't necessary. The Wally-World Special, or a decent aluminum type does the trick and will protect your rifle from your gentle mishandling, like bumping the tailgate or the trunk lid. Those nasty airport baggage handlers aren't at the range tossing things around. Again, this IMHO.

My own rifle rides around in a $49 (reg $99) double size aluminum case from ####'s Sporting Goods (USA)

Go Pelican all the way! Have dragged 4g of camera up haul lines in ice climbing to swimming across lakes with it clipped to a drag line. Will hold up to years of abuse. Just remember to change the seal over time as this always get damaged regardless of how careful you are. Just picked up a 1650 for a AR parts box(uppers and lowers) Cant go wrong with the best! Will survive more than a mere mortal can dish out( only ever wore one out-1300 small box)

i bought a 1750 case from a fellow board member and im very happy with it. the s**tty part is that it is too big to fit in my car.

im now in the market for a decent soft case, maybe i might go all out and get a drag bag when hell freezes over and the prices come down a bit

I've flown wiht rifles several times, although infrequently, and I've always kicked myself for not having agood aluminum case yet...If I was a bit more frequent flyer, I'd have got on by now, interested in suggestions...

I have the pelican 1750 Travel Vault and the Starlight 061352 wheeled case. Both are "waterproof" with a gasket sealed lid and have a "purge" valve.

The Starlight case is lighter then the Pelican and has the springloaded retractable handles. The wheels on the end are nice if you have a lot of gear to carry or just feel lazy.

I do find the Starlight easier to pack around.

I use the Pelican for my AI-700 sniper rig (with custom cut foam)and the Starlight for everything else.I can fit my SPR clone and Sig Green Classic in the Starlight with no problems.

Either cases are well made and will stand up to a Mack truck, but I give the edge to the Starlight.

The Hardigg cases look pretty sweet but I haven't seen one in person.

I agree with pmt, unless you are planning on airline travel, a cheap hard case will do. As long as it is padded and the rifle doesn't move around inside, you are good to go.
I have a SKB double rifle case with wheels on it for airline travel. Great for in the airport, but not so good across a gravel parking lot. I also have other hard cases for bouncing around in the truck or trailer on extended road trips to shoots. If I am just going to the local range, 9 times out of 10 it goes in the soft case.

I do not have any cheap guns and I do travel ALOT so all of mine have fitted custom built aluminum cases, some of these cases are looking pretty rough now.
1 case with 2 very expensive tac rifles came flying off of the freight cart at Sky Harbor airport, the case got severe road rash and the corners were badly dinged, opening it was a chore in itself, but the rifles were not damaged in any way.

I guess alot depends on how much value you place on the rifle as well as what your needs are, if the worst case is the case being dropped if you trip on the way to the truck, a cheap case will work fine, if you are having to let the baggage gorillas handle your rifle at airports much, something very sturdy would be well advised.

Dragbag

I had the Pelican and a few other hard cases, but decied to go with a Blackhawk drag bag, it is bar none the best.

I have Dragbags as well.

I use the hard cases for transporting my guns in my vehicle, and then transfer my rifle to my Dragbag for matchs.

I just like the added protection while my expensive rifles are in the back of my car.

My stuff never leaves the dragbag unless it is being used. If I own something that is fragile enough to get broken in a bag that the professionals use to store their gear in, while humping their gear through some craphole, while having to defend their life with what is in that bag..........If it is good enough for them it sure as hell is good enough for me.

I just bought a Starlight 061352 WITH wheels AND foam -

$214.70 CDN SHIPPED to my house!!!

I won't say where I got it - they are a non sponsor of the site, but are in Canada.

Well, Purolator stopped by with a little present for me today... the Starlight rifle case is HUGE! It will hold four unscoped rifles (or shotguns, in my case!)

It's a little bigger than I need... I think I might pick up the 38" as well for my AR or Citori.

Either way, this thing is built like a tank. The locking latch system works very well, and it looks like it's indestructable. Time will tell if I can damage it.. :)

I just bought the 38" 'tactical shotgun/rifle' case in OD. Much better length than the 52".

Does anyone know of a source for extra foam? Upholstery store?

The price I was quoted for an extra set of foam was almost as much as the case (within $30!), and I want to have cutouts for all my toys....

I have a Starlight for my Tac. rifles and it is pretty much bullet proof. The case cost me $200 so I believe thats a small insurance policy for my rifles ranging between $2000 and $8000. I only travel with them on the plane once or twice a year but I wouldn't travel without that case. And yes the wheels are a nice feature when you travel.

In the truck however I only use the drag bag as I know I'm the only one that will be handling it so it provides enough protection and it is very convenient.

So get both!
