Poly Choke Question

Poly Choke ( Nitram LLC) installed a choke on my 16 gauge model 500 Mossberg. Very nice job but the gun shot 10" low at 25 yards. I used an old trap shooter's tip and bent the barrel slightly upwards until it shot to POI. Got to admit the tip was not for the faint of heart but it worked great. When Marbles was doing Poly Chokes all I had installed by them were made to shoot straight. I don't think Marbles told customers they "bent" barrels to make them shoot right.

Never knew that one. Always thought they installed it off center

Oh my! .... Might have re-rethink this again..

A properly installed Poly Choke on a fast handling shotgun is a lot of fun and a lot of versatility. It has the retro vintage sporting era going for it as well. I have two equipped and I like them very much.

A nice set of screw in thin wall tubes works good :)

I asked about that but was told they could not put a brass bead on with a thin wall choke. Had to use one of those truglo sights instead which would look really strange on a 1947 made shotgun.

Did you ask briley
That is where I get mine done for the small gauges and vintage guns

I have a winchester model 12 in 12 ga with an old polychoke. They significantly effect your sight picture, and i think it hurts my accuracy on longer shots. I plan on removing mine.

I don't know what version you have but if it was a factory installed one and you care about resale I would not remove it
I am not up on model 12 any more so maybe someone will chime in but I think the factory installed ones didnot have the barrels stamped with choke type
Cheers

M12's sporting Poly Chokes were all after market. Older Polys were silver soldered on, new ones are threaded. Poly Choke is steel compatible but the older models may shoot off if larger steel pellets are passed through them. also, steel should never be fired with a constriction tighter than modified. Further, if you remove your Poly Choke you will be stuck with a cylinder bore short barrel as barrels were cut off to accommodate the choke device. I would recommend you pattern your shotgun as I have one with a poly choke and it prints spectacular patterns in around the modified setting.

Yes the unit was but they could also be ordered when you purchased the gun and factory installed by winchester just like they did with the cutts
Normally no choke barrel markings on the barrel and an alternate adjustable choke fitted is a factory installation
Up until a year ago they still produced the original style as version 1 and the new threaded known as version 2
Unfortunately I remember reading they went bankrupt since but that has not been confirmed
Cheers

Not my words
I have checked the Bankruptcy Court for the ED of Wisconsin and while I have found a few instances of a Todd Martin being in the system, there is nothing for either Poly-Choke or Nitram LLC. I tried to check the Wisconsin corporations division to see if the company is still active but the site is down for me at the moment.

Had Poly-choke or Nitram gone into bankruptcy, the trustee would be obliged to return 3rd party property to its rightful owners. All you would need to to is send a letter to the trustee with the identifying features of your property and request its return. However, there is no bankruptcy filing for either business entity so that is not an option.

I also checked the ATF and as of July 2017, Poly-CHoke is still listed as holding an FFL.

I suggest you send a letter of complaint to the Wisconsin Attorney General Consumer Fraud Divsion and complain that Poly-Choke is taking money from out of State consumers but not doing any work and not returning property that has been sent to it. You have made several good faith efforts to contact the business but never get any answer.

You might also complain to the ATF that one of its licensees is taking gun smithing work but not returning gun parts. This could be indicative of bigger problems at the licensee that merit the ATF giving it a good look-see.

Have never ever heard of Poly Choke being available on M12's...Cutts were for skeet guns as with Simmons ribs and the like. Talked with Poly Choke a few years ago...they very well might have closed their doors for good.

According to MADIS "The Winchester Model Twelve" book, Winchester offered Poly Choke, Cutts Compensator and Weaver chokes factory installed on special order. These guns had no factory choke markings and the barrels were forged with a shoulder to facilitate installation of the device. According to the book, when an old custom shop smith was asked how do you tell it was factory installed he replied, " ours won't shoot loose".

Thanks Darryl. I seen two of them over the years both mind you were pigeon grade guns

Surprisingly Winchester custom shop did a brisk business in the 1950's converting standard Twelves to 3" magnum and adding Poly Chokes. It must have been some good times to have a company offer what you want over standard production fare for the common man.

?? and where will it be installed. The originals have to be bored and silver soldered in plus there was different sizes for different 12ga barrel dimensions
Other than shipping the barrel back to the US I would be shocked if there is a man alive still in canada that knows how to install one correctly
Cheers

3macs has a very valid point here. I had a poly choke installed on a barrel back in the 70's, the deluxe one with the porting. The porting made it a pain to clean and was ugly. So I cut it off the ported part. Next issue was the gun patterned 24" low and 8" R at 40 yards. The barrel threw it's pattern's to point of aim before the PC was installed. The issue is getting the PC installed properly and the choke concentric to the barrel as not to end up with the issue I did. To make a long story short I ended up cutting off the PC and making a slug barrel out of it and bought a new barrel and eventually had screw in chokes installed in it which have worked great. Since the popularity of screw in chokes came along I have never heard of anyone getting a poly choke installed in Canada, and to tell you the truth I am not sure why you want or need one as screw in chokes will do everything you need to do and probably a whole lot better if they are properly installed.
But if your heart is set on having a poly choke make sure the fella that does the work knows what he is doing or you will be getting it cut off, as barrel bending is also a lost art in Canada.

Dave Riffles book Mode 12 "The Greatest Hammerless Shotgun Ever Built" makes nomination of poly Choke...however his book may be inaccurate. Riffles book is regarded as the authority where among M12 circles where Maddis has been said to have inaccuracies. I am only familiar with Riffle and have never had Maddis' book in my hand. Kinda cool this!
