Poor Ruger #1's!!

The new editions desperately need better quality wood.
Thankfully they are still being produced, and in cartridges and variations never seen before.
I have a small collection of 19, with 2 more on the way.
With the lackluster wood and dollar differential these may very be the last "new" ones.

19 is a good start. :)

That's what I remember, I thought it was a fantastic idea and a good job of it!! Should have solved the issue where some people find the safety in the way of ejection.

I've been playing around with the idea of doing up a #1 for my father with all the ideas I have for one - of course I have a few other things on my plate currently that would need completion first.

The number one was too uppity, are we not now seeing its real roots, as far as its support goes? Soon market forces may correct the number one to be more in line.

What's not to love! Wouldn't change a thing...

That is utterly disgusting. Full wood and single shot. Pffftt, need stainless tactical style with DM.

I think hoytcanon needs a signature icon to put in his pics..... Always rugers (I wholeheartedly approve).... And always in groups of four.......

John has the moose...... What should Hoyt's be?....

Ruger No. 1s definitely need a safety upgrade out of the box. I can't stand the stock one. TROP gun parts makes a fantastic one that should be OEM (listening Ruger???).

I also hate Ruger's folding rear sight, maybe it is just personal preference but I would prefer a peep sight like the scout's, but attached to a scope base, either that or the same rear sight they put on the Boddington special editions.

Other than those two things they are great rifles just as they are.

My RSI did not have the best of wood and it was starting to get scratches so I changed it to synthetic the other one is too nice to use

It would also be nice if they used forged steel for the receiver and guts instead of castings.....especially considering the price.

I've been making it the hardwood floor for the past couple years... I could put in a little green Hulk statue to "classy" it up if you prefer???

I like the hulk.... So do my boys....

But ya, I do recognize that floor..... Lol

Just love the pics..... I wager if I saw that floor, I would identify it with you..... And kudos for no toes in the pic :).......

I crop the size 13's out...

Don't get me wrong, everyone has the right to do what they wish with what is theirs. I also believe that we should have the right to hunt/shoot/collect/buy/sell/trade and defend ourselves with any and all firearms. No licensing, no registration, nothing but proof of competence and a lack of criminal activity to be able to excersize that right.

I'm all about that and I personally have no need to stock a No.1 with synthetics, but I'd sure love to have some chambered in .25-35 & .32-40 as well as .375 Win. Toss in one in .33 Winchester to boot.:d

Throw 32-20 and 25-20 in the mix as well... but I promise not to mention the other similar sized round for fear of reprisals.:)

.32-40? Nice

To me the Ruger #1 has always been about a discipline.
One shot one kill.
But i can do that with a repeater just as well.

You will not find fault or weakness in Ruger's investment castings. You speak from Internet rumour and not knowledge. Ask an old machinist about quality investment castings.

Not questioning that their casting strength is safe, just their business decision to cheap out by casting everything from receivers, to bolts, to revolver frames, slides, etc and then doing as little finish machining as possible. I think they would cast a barrel if they could get away with it. I'll never pay MORE money for a cast gun then a forged or billed built piece. They don't cast because it makes a better stronger gun, they cast because it's cheaper then machining from bar stock, and less machining in the end means lower skilled staff putting these together. I just expect more for my $$....and I bet 90% of the guys that own Ruger centerfire rifles have no idea they are cast.

Investment casting is anything but cheap, quite the opposite in fact. The reason other companies don't do it is because of the extra expense and time involved. Yes there is less machining, but you then trade that for time and cost of the raw part.

Then what exactly is the problem?

I know they are cast, I also know that they are much tougher than required (over engineered) and have never let me down... "cast/milled" is of no consequence... "function" is the deal.
