pop up hunting blinds? whats your choice

i have the pleasure of using a good friends Primos double bull pen ground blind.
wow just wow.
quality is amazing,sturdy,exterior material is really thick but as my mate said 'if a bear wants to use it as a ### toy
is going to be wrecked'

now these things aint cheap and you get what you pay for.

whats everyones elses choices in quality ground blinds and why?

obviously this isnt a question for truck hunters as we know ford,gmc and dodge are poor quality
 
I prefer the dome style pop -up except a wet snow collapses them and breaks the poles every year.Use 12" spikes for pegs so they can be recovered from frozen ground leaving enough sticking out to pull. I curse the t shaped toggle fasteners for the windows with frozen hand and 50 to do up.Ameristep. Why they don't make a teflon coated blind that sheds snow i don't know?

I have had a few Ameristep dog house blinds an there good for one guy. I like to tuck mine in to the thick evergreens witch helps keep the snow and wind off the blind very comfortable they way I have it set up. I also use a plastic lawn chair those cheap ones and cut the legs down so I see perfect out the window with my adjustable gun rest. The whole set up is cheap but its what you do with it. The only thing I wish these blind makers would do with the windows is get rid of the Velcro and use magnets less noise.
 
I recently retired an old Primos hub-style blind (model name unknown) which lasted for years of extensive use. It survived several long-distance rolls across the field when not pegged down, heavy snow dumps, high winds, snow dumps, you name it. Worked like a champ. The only thing I didn't care for was those t-handle buttons/elastic loops for the windows, as mbogo3 mentioned. The thing finally just wore out; I should have gotten another one.

But nooooo...I replaced it with a similar-looking POS that I purchased at WSS in Winnipeg just a couple weeks ago; brand name "Barronnet" or something similar. Complete garbage. The hubs pop open from even a mild breeze, the zippers sound like chainsaws and are very "sticky", all the hubs creak and squeak constantly, and even the fabric is very noisy. It's been set up less than 5 days, and it leaks far worse than the Primos did after more than five years. I sat in it for several hours yesterday with one foot propped up against the east wall hub to keep it from collapsing, which it did with a rifle-shot sound every time I relaxed my vigilance. Crap!!!

I just shot a deer last weekend out of one of these Doghouse blinds. Shaner is right...it's not big enough for two guys. I sat with my 8 year old daughter and we fit but just barely. 2 adults would be no fun. The Velcro is annoying as hell but the front window is more than big enough to shoot out of. I actually zipped it up about 4" to line up with my tripod and chair.

This was my first time using a ground blind. Kinda nice to have a little spot out of the wind where you can stash your gear and get set up for the day. I was ready for a 12 hour sit...but a very considerate spiker showed up after 3 hours.
 
We use ground blinds a lot and sometimes have as many as 8 set up. Altan Safe makes decent blinds....Check out the "Den". Usually around $160.

Cabelas just had a huge sale on. Ameristep Caretaker blind, reg $179 on for $69. Sorry, I bought the last 6.

Don't use tree stands hardly at all anymore.
 
I have the Ameristep 3 man. It is big enough to sleep in laying diagonally and tall enough for my compound as well. I hate some things about it; like how noisy it is to setup, the t-bars on the camo flaps and the velcro for the mesh netting. I bought it on sale at Cabelas for around $99 which is about what I'd pay for it. They would do well to change over the t-bars to magnetic clasps. I was wishing I was in it this morning instead of my tree stand. It's great for rainy or snowy days. It's also nice for turkey hunting if you have a buddy along. My brother and I have comfortably hunted all day out of it several times. The strap for the pack up bag broke in the first spring I owned it. Best to plan on a way to carry it out if that happens. I used some sleeping bag straps to make a sling but really that was uncomfortable. I'll be using it in the morning for a deer spot.
 
Currently using a Herters Ground Blind that I got at Cabelas. Its a quick pop up style that has windows and mesh that slide up and down so no noisy velco or extra poles to support the roof. I like it so far, really easy to set up, fits in a bag the can be slung over my shoulder. On sale right now too for $99.00.
 
currently i have the use of a primos double bull blind of my mates
but these are out of my price range.quality blinds no doubt

i have done a fair bit of research and chatting with others this week and you get what you pay for.
if you notice the weights of some of these blinds range from 13lbs to 17lbs,the materials are thinner.
primos are 20lbs plus and the (an important part) UV protected.
few people have told me their 'specials' from CT and cabelas havent lasted 3 years due to the sun damage.

so i found 'rhino' hunting blinds and just ordered one of these. tough thicker material,UV protected blah blah blah.
awaiting delivery in next few weeks and i will report back with my findings,obviously comparing it with my mates primos blind.
if its any good i am buying another.
 
I tried out an altan hideout last year when TSC had them on one of their 65% off sales.
Gun hunting my biggest complaint is the windows are a bit high when I'm in my low turkey chair with the trigger stick I normally use.
Bow hunting for me with my compound... it sucks. I need to be tucked in a corner slouching down in my chair with my draw arm sticking out the window behind me. I'm 6'5, so that isn't going to be an issue for everyone.
Can't say I would pay their regular full price, but I'd buy one on sale again. Super quick and easy to put up and pack around, but you want to practice takedown a couple of times before going into the field.

I've been looking at a Barronett Big Cat to try and help with the space issue when bow hunting.

I mentioned my Ameristep Battlefield earlier in this thread, I can stand up fully in it and I am 5' 10". Might be something for you to look at. Just be warned it's got a pretty huge footprint. I can lay out diagonally in it no problems. Actually with a ground sheet and some decent pegs, you could camp out in it. It can be had on sale at Cabela's in the $119 range I think.
 
so i bit the bullet and ordered a mossy oak patterned Rhino hunting blind.

i have been using a friends Primos XXL bullpen,so there is my comparison.
the primos material seems to be just a tad thicker than the rhino blind.
basically both blinds are the same size.
i prefer the door on the rhino.
all windows are bungee cord closed.
the rhino tent pegs are cheap compared to the primos.
both blinds are UV treated.

I use a Barronette Grounder 250. I like it. I have had it for 3 years; and can probably get another 2 out of it. 5 years for a 100$ blind from CT is a fair to me.

I put it up in late Aug early Sept and don't take it out until end of Nov. Its handled all the NS and ONT weather can throw at it lol
 
Have the herters as well. Nice windows on it but the hub popped a pole 4th time setting it up. Popped back in no problem but makes me wonder about the long term viability of this setup lol
