I picked up a k98 mauser this afternoon, and I'am not too sure of its background. The receiver has a coat of arms stamped on it, as well as the left side of the buttstock. Waffenampts are stamped all over. All parts are matching. The barrel in front of the receiver is stamped 41D 26 3. The serial# has an H prefix. The buttplate has PRG and what looks like a Christian cross stamped on it. The sling has L&F stamped. Deep bluing( about 95%), Oberndorf marked. Rifling is sharp, hardly looks fired. I read somewhere that even though the Germans were at war, they made and sent k98's to various allies, also Lugers to Persia, and other countries. The wood has a few handling marks on the buttstock. What's it worth? Thanks in advance for any information.

the buttplate markings sure sound portugese, as does the crest, it should say "1941" below the crest.

IIRC the portugese received weapons from both germany and britain, who were both trying to sway opinion since portugal was neutral.

i can't say too much about value, other than that i saw a minty one a few years ago with matching bayonet for $700, so i would say something less than that.

It is stamped 1941 below both crests.

Sounds like a nice K98 Mauser the Germans made for export to Portugal. The losses the Germans sustained during 41-42 on the Eastern Front ensured many of these fine quality rifles never went to Portugal, but actually were put into service with the Wehrmacht.
L&F on the sling is a common WW2 German maker.
I bet the prg on the prg on the buttplate is actually brg....another well known German wartime producer.
I have one in the G block, these are real gems, prices have risen on these in the past few years.
Some Russian captured rifles surprisingly have been Port contract peices! Nice score, please post pics\

joe n, you are right, its stamped brg on the buttplate.

coyote, what are the prefix letters? So far there are "G" and "H". Does anyone know how many Ports were made? How can you tell where the rifle served, Portugal, or German service?

with these rifles, it is probably safe to say that if it comes with a matching bayonet then it came from portugal.

probably the only way to verify german service would be if it went through russian, yugo, or norwegian rebuild.

Norwegian k98

Does that mean there are rebuilt Port k98's from Norway in 30-06?

The mint(came out of a warehouse some place, coated with cosmoline. Barrels were full of it) Portugese contract K98's we had in the shop I worked in, long ago, all had laminated stocks, matching bayonet and a used sling. They all had the Portugese crest on the receiver. They sold, quickly, for $215.

Geez...one of me ole Mausers made it to the Library! I'm glad it made its way to a worthy owner!! And if anyone cares there's one advertised for $169 at the Shootist in St. Albert...But it doesn't look like a beater!!
