I leave mine in the factory hard-cases and stack them.
My closet in my office is stacked full of those hard cases....unless I get a safe big enough to walk into that's not an option so much, but it IS a good way to do it if you can for sure.
You are absolutely correct that it takes a bunch of space. I only own a few so it works and it allows me to keep specific tools and accessories with the guns. Prevents those little pieces from wandering.
You use the duct tape as a barrier between the magnet and the gun? I am a bit paranoid about long term storage using this method, concerned about spot corrosion where the gun stays in contact with the magnet. Any thoughts?
buy another safe for pistols and ammo, shelfs, no guns falling off etc...

Here is what I did in my safe:
I removed all the shelves inside and screw metal pegboard so now I can use magnetic utility hooks (from princess auto) . For my handguns, I'm using the door as a storage with greyman tactical board with pegboard power drill holder or screws with brass cases glued on. I'm really happy with the result!
