Powder Coat Lead Cast Bullets

Powders for powder coating will vary as much as paint will from different manufacturers. They use slightly different binders and pigments and possibly in different ratios. Different pigments (not dyes) will also have different effects on the composition as they are literally different chemicals in order to give different colours. The quality of the binder (the plastic that melts), purity, water content, and other factors all change how it works. There are also different types of plastics used or additives added to the powder by the manufacturers.

For example many powder coat paints contain TGIC (TRIGLYCIDYLISOCYANURATE) which is toxic. You might see the "cyanu" in the name which means it contains a form of cyanide. This additive makes the paint more durable from my understanding but is toxic (for more reasons than just the cyanide). There are countless other additives that companies put in powder coat media for various reasons such as resistance to salt, UV resistance, durability, and every other thing you can think of. This makes each one slightly different even from the same manufacturer.

Following this thread like a spotted dog to corner fire hydrant.
Have aspirations of accurate mid 2000's fps cast loads in 9.3x62, for Husqvarna 649 that we are just now starting to cast for. (notice how pricey them jacketed 9.3's are these days?)
Have here a beautious NOE .368" 280gr FN GC three-cavity. And all alloys available, from dead soft to linotype hard, in stock and mixable to whatever spec. proves to be ideal. Speed green lube. (thats ~if~ we go with traditional methods).

My questions to OP and the members;
- in your opinions, assuming 2400fps as the goal here, will PC be worth the cost and effort to set up for? (this being the only cal. that me needs higher vel for, all others are cast dead soft for the various antiques)
- gas checks, ... best installed when sizing, after the PC coat?.
And last, anyone got a Lee push through sizer for sale in .367"-.368"?. ;)

-

Viking, I'm sorry I have no idea for rifle at that speed. I load up pistol in .40 so far. Going to try my 10mm later. But no idea on rifle loads. Anyone?

I'm in the same boat as viking. I have a new to me 35whelen and a new noe 360 230 rg2 mold. I've never done the PC thing but it sure doesn't seem that complicated. I don't care about zombie green or glow in the dark boolits. Can someone please tell me a tgic free powder that works well? Tool blue seemed the bees knees but that's apparently no longer available. Thanks

PC is not expensive, toaster oven, $40 or less, powder $20 for 5000+ bullets, non stick pan and plastic container.

I opened up my push though lee sizer from .430 to .433 but you would need to open up a .358 to .368 which is a big jump.

It can be done but will take a long time.

Has anyone tried powder coating bullets using an actual PC gun? I would think this would be way easier if you sat them on a firm piece of metal screening, connected the wire to the screen, apply voltage to screen/bullets, start coating.. then screen right into oven for baking...

on amazon or ebay kits can be had for around $150 with almost free shipping from Eastwood on ebay ($6)

You waste so much power doing it that way, and its so simple to do it this way

You dont need perfect coat either, i have shot these 44 mag in blue with ok coating at 1800fps with no leading.

I size and apply gas checks after PC'ing. I've given thought to PC'ing after to really secure the gas checks on but haven't tried it yet. I don't go too high in velocity though. My GC'ed bullets are 310gr in a 44 mag so are only going 1200-1400fps or so.

I have a 265gr .433 accurate mold on order. I am hoping to get a little more accuracy out of my marlin 1894 micrgrove. I will try and push pc bullet to 1600+

I place my PC bullets on parchment paper to bake them. They come right off.

Auggie D.

i used to do that but the bottoms come out brown, not that it effects the powder coating but i've since switched to nonstick aluminum foil and i can get more uses per sheet vs parchment paper.

I switched to non stick pan, works great and no more foil/parchment paper.

$3.5 from the dollar store.

Non stick pan. check.

I'll be working with Ted's (Why Not?) method of 1/2 inch square shop paper towel over powder wad, and C.O.W filler to 1/2 way up the neck. Can't wait to get started.
PC should be the icing on the cake.

I accidentally used regular aluminum foil once. I had some pretty weird "gas checks" on the bullets that wouldn't come off :p
I decided to remelt those ones instead of loading them, just in case. PC'ing produced some smoke, wear a respirator if you are inside a garage.
I use parchment paper now since I have a big Costco sized roll of it just lying around.

I have the accurate 43-260B and the NOE 432-265RD. Both get sized to .432 and both shoot lights out in 5 different 1894s I've loaded them for. The GC ranch dog gets 22gr of w296 and the AM gets 10gr unique in 44 special cases for plinking. Ranch dog shoots an honest inch at 100 @1700fps from my 1894.

I have the 43-260M on order. I am using lee mold 44mag and size to .432 which shoots 2inches at 50 yards open sights using 23gr of 296 and h110. I opened up the sizer to .433 for the new mold.
