Powder for 45/70

H322, Alliant Reloader 7, have worked well for me with those bullet weights. Although many guys I know like 4198, 3031 aswell. I also use Alliant 2400 for light plinking loads. 25gr of 2400 powder with a 400gr bullet is an accurate plinking round, about 1300fps.

Good luck

I also used 2400, only the old Hercules variety, with 420 cast. I used 25.7 grains, because that was what a certain size Lee scoop held! That was a good, acurate load, but gong up a couple of grains dropped the accuracy.
My other good plinking loads were 14.4 grains, just what a 1.6 gram Lee scoop held, of Unique. I think this made my best groups ever.
The same scoop held 22.5 grains of IMR4227 and that also, was a very accurate, real light plinker.

I tried 13.5 gr. of Red Dot (determined as well by the Lee scoop)with 405 gr. cast from my old Marlin - very accurate and pleasant to shoot.

My best accuracy and consistency with jacketed and cast bullets in heavy loads has been with two main powders, IMR 4198 and IMR 3031. For the lighter plinking cast bullet loads I've had good results with 2400 and IMR 4227 but I'm now working on loads using Trail Boss.
