powder prices

I put my vote towards crappy US economy (no offence but facts are facts) and continued greed. What you should reallly be asking is why are albertan's still paying health care premiums. If we got rid of that who cares about a couple of extra $$/Lb for powder we pay.

What I have noticed is the price of components go up in the US, with rumors it will go higher. Likely this will affect us here eventually as well. I wouldn't expect prices to go anywhere but north.

It isn't getting cheaper, because we are getting screwed, again. IMR Powders are made in Canada, Alliant is made in Sweden, most Hodgdons is made in Australia but we still pay nearly double what the States pays.

1 lb IMR 4895 "Made in Canada" in Big Bear Sports Great Falls Montanna $14.95 last week.

1 lb IMR4895 "Made in Canada " in WSS Calgary $33.95. "Sorry we're out of stock."

Varget "ON SALE" in BIG BEAR $9.95 US
Varget "ON SALE" in Russels Calgary $28.95 CDN

WTF????

That's disgusting? maybe we could get all the dealers on this forum to comment it would be fun to see what excuses we see. Oh wait I already know. it's called the NAFTA. The USA screws us over and over and we just keep on bending over. That's just like our Grade A lumber getting shipped to the States and we get their Grade C crap imported and we're paying double what they pay. That's why I do most of my shopping in the USA.

cost is high on components. The small gun shop I work in, I believe we pay around $24-25 for a can of IMR powder or Hodgdon, and retails for $34.99

Todd, I believe you, small shops can't compete with Wholesale sports, Higginson's buying power. But why do you have to pay 100% more wholesale up here than what powder retails for in Montana?

We pay health care premiums in Alberta because we pay for our own health care plus Atlantic Canada's, Manitoba's, Quebec's, ...

In December, I bought 2 cans of H4350 at Le Baron @ $20.75 (20% dicount). Two years ago, I bought from Lawry Shooting Sports in Caledonia around $24/lb per 8 poung keg.

Stock up when the price is low and avoid shipping costs. The same can be said about primers. :D

Ouch!

I believe the price of Hodgdon ball powders has dropped some at SIR in Winnipeg. I bought a pound of BLC 2 at 21.99 about a month ago, and I know it used to be 26.99 or thereabouts last year.

The reason? Just like every other Canadian retailer, because they can.

Anybody know the regs on transporting smokeless powder across the border?

IMR is made in Canada, but packaged in the US. Thus the same import hassles. If we could buy direct from Expro, it would be much cheaper. As it stands, Higginson's is your best bet.

I have to agree with Dogleg here, as usual our own people are putting it to us again.

Powder is the cheapest cost in reloading.....

I use, almost exclusively, Alliant's PROMO and ClayDot powders. They are made by our American friends, not imported.
PROMO and ClayDot are top quality powders and are packaged in 8 pound kegs only. That way, you get a lot of powder for a fair price.
PROMO is C$95.00 for 8 pounds, while ClayDot is a little more. That's around C$13.53 a pound, all taxes in. Cheap right? These two fine powders have many applications for other pistol calibers too.
If you want to complain about prices, look at lead. A lead 9mm 125grain round nose bullet is around 7.3 cents each, or C$73.00 per thousand.

That's not the issue. The issue is: we being screwed. Don't matter that it's only a little bit. What matters is, that it's happening and we don't like it.
