powder shortage!?

This thread got me thinking that perhaps I should buy some more powder and bullets, so I made a call and two more pounds of R-10X, and 500 more Sierra .204" Blitzkings are on the way.:)

I must say that I've experienced good and bad since the shortage.

The good:
I now have 4-5 good loads worked up with 4-5 different powders for each of my rifles. I've also weaned myself off of alliant powders and to tell you all the truth I may not got back once they are back in stock.

I also know several old timers who do have a generous stock of powder at home. All I've had to do is ask and they've gladly given me powder to keep me going.

The bad:

Watching people I know who shoot maybe 1-2 lbs of powder a year continuously buy more and more because "ph my god the sky is falling, powder supplies are going to run out!!"

Me personally I buy powder before I need it and when I find it for reasonable prices. I will also gladly hook up buddies with powder if I have extras of something that they need.

Its kind of ridiculous that Canada has not managed to open a large manufacturing plant for Powder , Primers , Brass and Ammo.

I wonder if they have taken into consideration the kind of ammunition issues we would have if our troops were involved in a major conflict of any kind.

Our military ammunition IS made here. IVI is owned by General Dynamics now, but it's not like they would have a choice about sending it south before we got it. They also own the powder plant that makes most IMR powder here. Military ammunition supply is almost totally outside the civilian one.

Just noticed P&D in Edmonton put up a notice of powder shortage on their website.
This is the first time i've ever seen anything like that from them.

I guess its time to start stocking up on anything i find that i use, although i have more than i need right now once spring hits and i start shooting more and more that wont last too long.

ah right....

Guess you've never heard of general dynamics then.....

Not only do they make many of our combat systems and platforms (LAVIII)

They make all our Ammo (IVI) fom 9mmm to AT missiles. powder, projectiles and brass
They don't sell to the public.

How about most IMR powders that are marked MADE IN CANADA ? Problem is they are subsidiary of American company and all powder goes bulk into USA for retail packaging in 1, 4 & 8 lb bottles.

I blame the hoarders amongst us.

Maybe some of you who have amassed a 20 year supply could put some up on EE.

Not. I didn't stock up when powder was plentiful just to sell it to those with no foresight when supplies are low. But thanks for the suggestion.

Agreed. It is NOT about hoarding. It is about making sure you have enough for YOURSELF when times are tight. Same as bullets. As much as I love shooting I do not rattle off hundreds of rounds every time I go to the range. If I can shoot a few groups and BS while there I am pretty content.....

With the way sh+t is going on in this peaceful world of ours I am sure it will always be hit and miss when it comes to powder, primers, brass and bullets.

I see things a little differently, I have no pension coming from work after I retire. Asides from the obvious benefits of being able to survive droughts in components I am stockpiling for future use when I'm on a limited fixed income and can't/won't pay what appear to be constantly escalating prices. I love a good deal & I'm not afraid to buy in bulk. Don't get me wrong ..... I make decent money, we're doing OK, the wife saves like a possessed squirrel LOL and I still have another 10 years to work. Thing is, when I do retire I'd like to be able to shoot/reload essentially for free for the rest of my life. Realistic?.......... Who knows but worth a try ....... seems the stuff aint gittin any cheeper! I figure what I stash today I won't have to buy tomorrow at twice the price. Heck 22LR was average $.03/shot 5 years ago and now its easily double that never mind shooting anything with some thump to it.
Does that make me a hoarder or is it, as I like to say .......... intelligent retirement planning?

Wonder how long the shortage will go on for.
I have a few pounds here and there for different rifles I could likely stretch it out if its only 6 months to a year.
