Practicality of KSG's and other 'short' tactical shotguns..

Man, i've been tempted to buy one of those because they look so friggin cool! I went and bought a cheapo Rem 870 tactical 18" for $325 instead, and glad i did.
I just find that the short tactical shotguns have very little practical use. You can't skeet or trap with them really...unless you don't mind the old guys with their sweet o/u's looking at you at the skeet range like a fool lol..
They're good if your shooting range has that forest pathway course to which you can use a tac shotgun, but otherwise, it's a "home defense" shotgun that you'll likely never use..
What are your opinions?
 
It is practically awesome...

I really like mine. Gets its share of range time. Just good old fashioned 15 slug fun!
 
Probably worth it just for the looks you get at the range going through 14 rounds without reloading from that little thing.
 
I have one. It is the least practical firearm I own. Nothing more fun on the back forty with a pile of cinder blocks though.

If the novelty wears off firing any gun under any circumstance, at any location, at any distance, at any time of day.....please turn in your man card......You're off the team.
 
I love my KSG, and IMHO it may not be the typical wingshooting shotgun... But it would work well on deer, bear and all sorts of small game. I have the SMT tactical choke tube adapter for mine, it allows me to use RemChokes.

My KSG is awesome. Why do I have it.
- short compact high capacity
- mainly used as my main hiking / defence shotgun.

I camp often in remote areas for lengthy periods and calling 911 for an emergency simple is not an option. Even if it was, I'm not relying on a complete stranger to get off his a$$ to come save mine. Apart from animals that may want to eat me, there are people in this world who are evil, and have evil intentions. From dope growers to complete head cases. Read my tag line... I live by this motto.

I see that one poster said he'd installed a device allowing use of chokes. That seems like the ticket to me. I have the cheapest of cheap shotguns that is still a repeater, a stevens savage 350 with the "security" barrel as well as a longer field barrel. I generally use the field barrel with a modified choke for fooling around busting clays. I am by no means anywhere beyond using a Canadian Tire thrower on the farm. Now what I found was that when I patterned the longer barrel with a modified choke and field loads I got a reasonable spread.

With the short cylinder bore barrel I hit everything. That misconception that you can shoot from the hip and not aim a shotgun in a room seems true, at least with field loads. With buckshot it spread more with the shorter barrel and open bore, but was easily a reasonable choice.

I'm no expert in scatter guns, but it seems to me that the choke is the ticket. I've been told the longer barrel allows a smoother arc when swinging the gun to draw a bead on a clay or game bird.
 
I once went skeet shooting with my 8-shot, cylinder-bored 18.5" Mossberg 500 [I've had that sucker for 35 years or more...]. I shot well in the middle third of the pack. Don't sell 'impractical' shotguns short until you've really tried them out.
 
Home defense and pray you never need to use it... safe queen gun but will be getting a tactical shottie. Only the longer ones will be used frequently tho ! I love em all !
 
Because shooting trap and skeet is "practical?"

Shooting clay disks is just as fun and pointless as shooting at zombie targets.
 
for me it is the practically of long guns, like a full length M14 or MN.........

thats freaking huge for bush hunting.

Id rather hunt grouse with a KSG, deer with a bullpup 308......

etc etc
