Hi --

I have a Norinco M305, which is great fun, and a decent stash of Norinco 7.62 x 51 ammo. It is bimetal copper, steel cased copper washed milsurp ammo (non-corrosive).

I am considering buying a Savage bolt-action .308 -- perhaps the 10 FCP-K for target shooting and perhaps hunting, and I would like to be able to use the Norinco ammo for practice. Will this damage the barrel? I know that to get the best accuracy I will need to use higher grade ammo, but if I can use my less expensive Norinco that would save me $$$, plus I already have it.

Thanks.

ya i wouldnt do it i have a m305 also and i feed the pig with norinco surplus , but that surplus doesnt go near my savage fcp-sr

It's worth a try and should cause no problem. If it chambers it will fire just like any other .308/7.62x51 cartridge. Some generous military rounds have trouble getting into stingy commercial chambers.

The only issue is some firing pin spring are not strong enough to set off a x51 primer
Hey know you guys are really busy, but if I placed an order Monday morning and paid by depositing in the CanadaAmmo account, could you ship out a case of the 7.62x51 quickly enough to arrive in Victoria by Friday? I am only in town for the week -- that's why I ask.

Thanks

I have a savage FCP-K and a M14 and i would never run my cheap norc ammo in my baby. lol to me its like putting low end gas in a race car but hey thats just my thoughts

As I understand it, any .308 chambered rifle can handle the 7.62x51 Nato round. As it is Military Surplus Ammo it will be dirtier then most commercial ammo, but as long as you clean you gun, no worries.

No, they are interchangeable in either direction, and military and commercial ammo usually use similar powders, so one is not necessarily dirtier than another. Some manufacturers, Wolf being a good example, just makes dirty ammo. The caliber is irrelevant.

I have a Savage PC10 and it does not like the nork ammo. I fired maybe 10 rounds and the bolt was hard to open after firing. I save this ammo for my N-14.

One of my friends has a bolt action Savage and it doesn't like that ammo at all. Often has to ram the empty cartridge out.
Have to agree, fired many different brands of ammo in my steyr scout with no problem but most of the empty surplus PRC .308 cases stick in my chamber and are difficult to extract.

I'd also be hesitant to run bimetal jacketed bullets (steel and copper jackets) in a civilian rifle without a chrome lined barrel. I wouldn't want to damage a barrel in a decent rifle.

I fired a pile of it through my AIA Enfield today, works fine. I'm trying to order another case of it, but CanadaAmmo's website is down...

Cheers

Would not get caught shooting this norc stuff in any of my 308... Personal and wise choise... JP.

And that is where we take different paths caramel... My Norinco M14 LOVES this stuff & my AIA Enfield likes this stuff... So, for me, it is a GREAT round for both!

Cheers

Those strong rifles maybe made for it but i dont see using that in my Nemesis or my Steyr Scout even in XCR-M, i agree if it shoot with no issues, it is a good deal... JP.

I've had no issues with norc surplus in my Winchester 70. It's also so surprising accurate even if I said the groups I'm getting you wouldn't believe it was shot with surplus!

Different rd but maybe the theory carries over; milsurp 5.56 in a .223 is a no-go. Pressures are out of the operating parameters of a .223 sporting rifle.
I'd do some serious research before throwing 7.62 X 51 at a .308
Don't have a firm opinion one way or the other; just thinking some diligence is required.
Stay safe
