I'm looking at buying a precision rifle for some long range target shooting, but I'm looking for it to double duty as a big game (Moose/Elk) rifle.

I've been considering getting a 700Police in 300 win, from the guy in Calgary who's name we can't say. Any thoughts on usinig one of these for hunting. I know it's going to be freakin heavy, but the stock on the LTR's is too short and doesn't fit me well.

Once it's broken in and I've put in enough range time to be comfortable with it, it's likely going to be an 60% range, 40% hunting rifle.

Might want to check out the Sendero. Basically same heavy barrelled rifle but stainless, fluted, and I believe the stock is slightly different. Stock is still HS Precision but slight differences, I believe lighter too. Not exactly sure how much weight you will save but it is worth a look.

That's basically what I just did, a tuned 700P, from the same guy. Like you said, mostly range use, but versatile enough to set up on a cutline, or river bank, and wait. I want to shoot a bear, with mine.

Don't see any problem with the 700P. It's just a 700 Varmint gun in flat black. I use a 700 Varmint 260 and a Tikka T3 Varmint in 6.5x55. Both heavy barrels and I have no problem carrying them around all day. Hunting with high powered rifles only happens a few weeks a year. 99% of the time these same guns are shooting at ranges.

700P is good, but for hunting, I'd also go with the Sendero as it was suggested before. Same component plus it's stainless steel.;)

I'd forget the idea if I were you. The 700P's stock is longer and wider in the forearm compared to the Varmint or Sendero offerings. This rifle is going to be heavy as Hell for you to drag around. It'll definitely be a once in a lifetime experience for you because you're not apt to want to do it again, if you try.

I have a Sendero as well and it's not something I would recommend travelling long distances with. Great for sedentary hunting I'm sure but you still got to lug the thing there.

You're asking to much of any rifle if you expect them to fill such diverse interests with any degree of compatibility. Target rifles don't make great hunting rifles and hunting rifles don't necessarily make great target rifles.

Why not buy the 700P for target use and then pick up a good used SPS here on the boards? You see them here quite often (I've bought 3 already) and they're cheap enough so that if you bang them around in the bush while hunting, you won't give a #### if you beat it up some.

If you decide to go the 700P route anyhow, I recommend you buy an Artkis Drag Bag to carry it and all your accessories in. It's going to make your life a whole lot easier being able to put everything on your back like a napsack. Great piece of kit that will be a benefit no matter which way you go.

I have gone into the woods carrying a 15 pound rifle for days and still been able to make the shot. My hunting rifle is a 700p(.308 mind you) also and it is fine...heavy yes. If its to heavy for you and you still want it...get stronger! You'll be very happy with the 700p. Good luck!

I call bull####. You're going to lug around a heavy and cumbersome 15 pound rifle in the bush for days to make one or maybe two shots? Pffttt...ya right!

Funny part is its actualy 16 pounds. I dont hunt with it, I hunt with a 700p like I said. My point is that if he wants a 700p it can be used for hunting. Just because its heavy doesnt mean its impossible to hall around the woods and make a shot with it.

You must not be covering much ground. I'm a competitive power lifter so I don't believe I need to "get stronger!" (pics available if you feel this is an internet claim), and I still don't like to carry anything over 8lbs total in the bush. Ideally, my hunting rifle weighs 7lbs, scoped and ready to go. I also do a lot of trekking, and if there's one thing that teaches you it's that you feel every ounce you carry. 15lbs on long days would be absolutely brutal.

...and I'm just saying I've got one, and wouldn't dare take it on a walking hunt. Unless one classifies a walking hunt as a couple kms from camp or something, but here it's more like 20km days.

Is 10.5 lbs the weight of your 700P with a scope? If so, that's not as bad as I thought. Hell my m70 featherweight w/o a scope is 7.5lbs.

I do a lot of walking, I do a lot of sitting, I do a lot of driving, I do alot of packhorse hunting. 5 extra pounds on a rifle isn't going to kill me. I'm big enough and already carry 10 to 100 lbs of gear hunting in remote areas. I doubt I'll be mountain hunting with it and 100 lbs of gear. Chambered in 300 WM, I'm not going to be sorry for the weight.

I'm more concerned with the stock, handling and balance. Do you find the wide / thick stock makes this rifle difficult to shoot offhand or from a non tripod / sandbag supported position? Is the length and weight well balanced in this model or is it excessively barrel heavy? Is it so damn long you're irritated carrying it arround? Does the stock and matte finish hold up well to the elements?
