Precision rifles in 30-06

I've been kind of stewing on this for a while, I was going to turn my K98 into a long range shooter but decided i'd like to use the 30-06 round instead.
So in your opinions, what are your choices for a long range shooter in 06?
Right now I've got a Remington 700BDL in the caliber, but that's more like my deer rifle.
I'm just browsing and dreaming still, so any info to back up why you chose that particular rifle may persuade my decision.
 
"...going to turn my K98 into..." It in military configuration? You'll half its value if it is.
"...just browsing and dreaming still..." Been doing that for about 40 years, myself. You'll need to define what you think is long range and if you want a target rifle or a hunting rifle. Two different things. Are you thinking a complete custom build or just another .30-06 with a heavy barrel?
The worst of the whole thing is you'd need to find an action. Most rifle builders (private vs commercial) buy a rifle just for the receiver.

I would turn the K98 into a deer rifle and build the long range on the Remington 700. I like the 06 for a long range cartridge and have seen some great 1000 yd groups.
 
Yes, I am aware that adding a scope to my K98 would half its value. But then I don't plan on selling it either, to me it has the historical value and that's what matters.
I like the stock configuration of my Remington, walnut stock and iron sights and plan on keeping it that way.
What i'm looking for is a hunting rifle I can shoot in the 300 - 500 yard range. Something I can put a bipod on and have fun with.

If all you want ti shoot is 3-500, a 308win will more than suffice (and have a million options of rifle style/configuration).
For that matter, most quality hunting rifles are good to 500 in an '06.

If you have your heart set on a long range/tactical/target type 30-06, there is fewer choices. My personal build wound up farily heavy.

The 30-06 is a great old round, and is capable of great performance at the 300-500 yard ranges you are thinking.

What kind of budget you looking at? I bought a Rem 700 LSSF DM TH in 30-06 for around 900 bucks. Has a 24" fluted, stainless barrel, thumbhole laminate stock and is a pretty good shooter out of the box. I had the barrel threaded for a brake and enjoy shooting it quite a bit. Still working on loads for it, but so far 150 gr Amax and 4320 works well. I figured if I want to I can always buy a better stock / chassis someday.

All sounds like good ideas. This kind of changes the subject, but what if I just used my M305 for the same purpose? if .308 is good enough for the range i'm wanting to shoot at, i'm thinking why bother buying another rifle when I can convert what I already have?
 
And your M305 will never match the accuracy of a good bolt gun. I've tried. It costs a lot of money to get an M305 to shoot 1moa or even close to that.

Well, it does have slightly better ballistics, that's for sure.
However, I've heard it alleged that the shorter receivers for .308 are slightly more rigid, so maybe it's a toss-up? The .308 is also more popular for target shooting, though that's probably irrelevant if we started talking custom guns.

I'd love to do a .30-06 precision rifle too, that said ;)
 
If your not wanting a 308 why not go 300 win mag? 06 loaded low wound give you the performance of a .308 but loaded hot wouldn't give you the performance of a .300 just my opinion still a good cartridge and has killed a lot if meals.

Barrel life would be my reasoning. A non magnum 30 should do well for 5000 rounds +and a 300 ~1000. Also less recoil and noise in the -06
