Precision/Sniper/Tactical

Just back from the smith, .338 Lapua Magnum.

Got a new APA Fat bastard brake installed, Badger Arms bolt handle, and had the action bedded.

Can't wait to test it tomorrow with the 300SMK's I just loaded up.

Ohhhhhh... my goodness.... This rifle is so sweet now...

The brake is insane! Virtually no recoil, I swear an AR-15 has an equal amount of felt recoil... and that is with hot 300SMK loads too! The shooter gets no blast whatsoever, it is not distracting, and does not kick up any dust or dirt. According to my buddy beside me, it is not much worse than the old brake to shoot beside either, which surprised me.

Quite happy with the accuracy of the bedding too, need to do a bit more testing on the hottest two loads, hard to tell if it was the wind, the snow, or me, that pushed the two shots off by an inch, but still, some of the closest overall groups I have ever gotten with this gun.

It' would be .308win , no range report yet :/. Works been all over the place and I haven't been able to find enough free time at once to get out and shoot .

Iv got an on going thread in this forum where I post ongoing updates on ever thing I get up to, just to keep it all in one place .

Cheers

The Rem is looking good! Love that brake!

Good shooting! I have a pretty good technique for reloading the .338LM with minimal OCD type rituals;-)
Ogive variance I have down to under .001" and run out is under .0015" with the odd .002". I do not neck turn it is PITA I rather be out shooting. I use Lapua brass I do not uniform the primer pockets just clean them up and debur the flash hole (debur flash hole very important for consistancy) bushing die with .365" bushing sized 2/3 rds down to avoid neck shoulder junction donut also .338LM like long trim length now your chamber so you can leave trim length as long as possible but still safe. I anneal after every firing and use at least 10 seconds dwell time on all operations on the press to allow the brass to stop moving as well as two strokes on the bushing die in 2 different positions this allows a more uniform and consistant neck sizing. Here's my best 200m group so far I ran out of target the big holes are mine 6 shots at 200m

Nice group! Puts mine to shame still!

I am still developing my loading skills for precision rifle, so far my process is basically the following...

- Decap
- Clean primer pockets
- Neck size to 2 thou neck tension, rotate 180 degrees, and neck size again
- Prime case
- Dump measured charge
- Seat bullet, rotate 180 degrees, run through seating die again.

Have not had to trim yet, still below max length. This stuff (Ruag T headstamp) is on 3rd firing cycle, have not annealed because I do not have the facilities to do so, but was planning on running this brass to the end and going with virgin Lapua brass.

Lots of good tips for me to start incorporating though.

Hoping on borrowing a concentrically gauge from a friend soon to see how much runout I have.

Just loaded up another 25 cartridges, 5 different loads from 86gr to 88gr of H-1000 in .5gr increments, hoping to narrow in on the sweet spot of this barrel with the 300's, it seems to like the hotter loads, which suits me just fine for the longer range stuff. :D

Retumbo I find works good for 300 gr .338LM better then H-1000 in most cases.

The 180 degree technique is good remember dwell time at the top of the stroke this allows the brass to stop moving same with seating. I can run your brass through my Annealer I have a bench source. Never found the need to use virgin lapua I just buy once fired way cheaper!

I use a pecking technique for seating hard to explain easier to demonstrate but I find I get real good consistancy in run out. If I neck turned I could get more consistan neck tension but I am to lazy for that craziness.
