We have a .270 or less caliber restriction for small game here in Ontario, otherwise, I would use my .303 enfield on Coyotes.. I asked this a while back, but that topic seems to be gone.

I also do not own a scoped rifle, so I have zero knowledge on optics, and what's good or bad.

So..
I'm in the market for a .223 powered, scoped, fairly cheap all around rifle, pref. bolt action, hopefully made in North America.

I have a few choices, my budget will be around $500 for the rifle, the scope $200-250

Savage axis, the scoped model (if the scope sucks, let me know).
I've read the trigger pull sucks, but for $349, it doesn't seem horrible.

Remington 700, from $500-700, is it $200 better than the Savage?

Weatherby Vanguard?
$450-$600 Haven't read much on those.

if you choose the Axis get the unscoped model and get a better scope, they only come with a 3-9x40mm, you would be better off with a more powerful scope, and one of better quality than the scoped model comes with, i would also look at the stevens 200 aswell as the marlin X7 a lot of people on here like the stevens 200, im accually looking at buying one myself. The marlin didnt feel rite to me but everyones diffrent and this forum is filled with threads about how much people love them, as mentioned above the bushnell elite 3200 would be a good choice as far as scopes go. . .

I have the savage axis .223 with the scope and out of the box at 100 yards first two rounds were almost touching. I was amazed what a shooter it is for the price. With a little trigger work this is a keeper.

Scope

I just mounted a Redfield Revolution 4-12 x 40 on my new coyote rig (CZ 527 American in .204) and am impressed with the scope so far. Good clarity, long eye relief, and good warranty. This scope retails for around $250 (Accu-range reticle) and $230 (4-plex reticle.)

I realize that this price is towards the top of your scope budget. After a few years of predator hunting I have come to realize that glass quality is one of the most important factors in this sport. I started with a Tasco Varmint scope and it was okay but I found it unacceptable for low-light situations common in predator hunting.

Just trying to save you a step here. My advice is to spend as much as you can afford on glass.

Good luck

The Vanguard is a nice gun, but it is made in Japan by Howa. That doesn't bother me in the slightest, but you preferred made in North America.

I'm not ruling it out, they actually make a really nice kit, that comes with a Bushnell scope, and a case, and it's close to my price range.

Mostly, by the North america comment, I meant no norcs.

Just outside London. I was actually in Windsor this weekend. If you wanna try to set something up and the TC is a rifle you're considering, we can. If not, no worries. Just let me know.

I don't have anywhere to really try it out (Maximum .22LR or 12 gauge area)
But if you know anyone who has an open field, we could definitely try something.

The thompson looks pretty good, comes with a case, too!

I bought a stevens 200 in 25-06 and love it. It shoots better then me any day. Its hell on coyotes and wolf. I recently took a 250-300lb bear with it as well. I suggest a stevens 200 (can be had for $350 new) and then a decent scope. I have a barska 6-24-42 on lower power up to 12x its great. I'm in chatham kent if u wanna try a stevens 200 in a long action.

See, I thought we had a restriction like this, so I asked a conservation officer, asking whether it'd be alright to use my .30-06 on coyotes and he said it was fine, just be sure of the backstop. I also asked a conservation officer about places to plink, he told me about a location where people target shoot, and he forwarded me a parks pamphlet. The pamphlet clearly states on the first page no target shooting is allowed, only hunting.

I never did act on any of his advice. Nice guy though! :D
