If I were walking around in gopher country for a casual stroll my 17 HMR brought a few smiles from my face. SPLAT ! For general stump and pumpkin blasting a little 00 buckshot from my old mossberg pump 12 ga fits the bill.
Latley I've used my marocchi o/u 12 gauge with 7 1/2 birdshot. I have it choked IC/M. I just grab a few buck shot, and a couple rifled slugs. I only use a cylinder or IC choke with slugs. I love grouse hunting, but I have no more deer meat in the freezer. I usually don't get serious about deer until november
If its big game season at the time I love to wander with my M98 in 375 H&H, my Browning FN Safari in 30-06, the 7600 in .308 or from time to time the ole 99 featherweight in .300 sav.
If its just small game its the CIL .410 or the sportsman 58 in 12 ga.
Big Game season in Manitoba, I reach for the mid 50's win. 94, nothing compares to the feel of that rifle. Back in Sask, I bring out the family heirloom, '37 win 62 for gopher gettin.
The going for a walk gun is a Ruger semi carbine in 44 mag. with a bushnell halo light site. The Ruger is very light and handy. It handles everything out there big or small.
I guess it depends on where one walks.
Just the other day I was walking alone in pretty good grizzly country. Not hunting, just walking.
The sling on my shoulder held my old faithful, 30-06 Husqvarna.
Other times I'm content with just my Winchester Model 69 .22.
A 45/70 of some sorts. For awhile it was a TCR-87. Know a Marlin 1895GBL! Also a Remington Model 7 Custom KS in 350 Rem Mag for awhile but I no longer own it.
Sporterized lee enfield no4 mk1, or stevens 311 in bird country with a couple slugs and a couple oo buck, the rifle has a shoulder strap, the shotgun is cradled open in my left elbow.
if its just for a stroll in the woods down a trail for just getting out in the evening or afternoon walk about , i grab my model 24 savage 30-30/410 gauge, that way if i see a ruffy grouch or that ghost buck deer i have a chance at either of them
