Premium bolt action rilfes above your standard Model 70s, M77's, Rem 700's etc.

Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby, a friend of mine had one he took to Africa. Nicely balanced . Restock iif required.

I wish Ruger still produced that today. I've heard the latest Ruger Hawkeye African is a pale comparison to the old RSM. I've also been considering a Ruger No. 1 in 416 Rigby or something comparable but I prefer to buy new.

Blaser R8, or Sauer 404. Extremely well built, and for a moderate extra fee and two minutes of effort you can install an extra barrel and have much more versatility. Also they both offer take down portability for travel.

Do you have a caliber in mind?

You can pay a little more or alot more, for modest refinement and nicer wood, but you won't be spending that money for better functionality than one of the 7's... which is fine, as long as you are aware going into your wallet.

I really like the look for the ParkWest Arms (formerly Dakota) rifles in 416 Rigby.

What are some comparable brands around that level? Maybe I should be focusing on the premium American brands vs European?

High grade wood stock, blued finish, controlled round feed, big bore chamberings.

Kimber of Oregon built similar rifles in every safari cartridge you can think of. Very nice rifles. - dan

Looks like one of the AHR upgrades.

Yes, from Prophet's website
CONSIGN - CZ - 338WINMAG - MODEL 550 AHR - CUSTOM GRADE IV WALNUT STOCK (AHR) W/EBONY FOREND TIP/BLUED, 24"BARREL, TARGET CROWN, JEWELLED BOLT, C/W SWAROVSKI, Z3, 3-9X36, PLEX RETICLE

A little over the budget... But Epps has this Kilimanjaro DOCTARI SPECIAL EDITION in 450 RIGBY... also a slew of Dakota 76 (an estate/collection ?) with a nice Takedown/Traveler with barrels in

So far my top choices are:

1. Heym Express in 416 Rigby - These appear to cost well above 10k new, unsure if they can be had under that price second hand.

2. Parkwest Arms SD-76 in 416 Ribgy - I'm seeing some Parkwest Arms second hand at Ellwoods for under 10k, unsure what they go for new as the PWA site doesn't give pricing details. I'm a little hesitant to buy used as I've heard the later year PWA under Remington saw a decline in QA/QC before the bankruptcy. I'd also be open to picking up an older Dakota rifle.

3. One of the German straight pulls in a multi-cal platform.

4. Wait and see if Sako relaunches the 90 with the big bore options (Brown Bear, Grizzly etc).

Go with 4.

Does blaser go big bore on the r8? Would want the extra weight of the r8 for those, I liked the r93 better for regular cartridges, slimmer/lighter that suited them, the r8 would suit a thumper. I somehow don't think that's really what you want though, you sound like you need more traditional type actions. I'm loving my sako 90 peak, maybe wait it out, they should come around eventually. And if feeling the sako, could one of the new ones become a project platform to get to big bore, maybe one is just a good smith and barrel away from being what you want?

You're right, I am leaning more towards a traditional bolt action, ideally a CRF.

Sako 85 500 Jeffery

Sounds about right, I've never seen 500J ammo in stock at any Canadian retailer. I've even seen 505 Gibbs in stock, at $30/round.

I doubt I'll hunt hippo. Plains game and Cape Buffalo are on my list when I make it to Africa.
