Hi Guys/Gals
I have a pre 64 mod 70 Winchester in .270. The S/N places its manufacture date at 1954. The rifle is in good shape overall it has been used but not abused scuffs and dents with a small gouge at the wrist on the left side. There is one issue with this rifle, the barrel has been stretched about 2 inches behind the muzzle. I discovered this when I was cleaning the bore and the clean rods pressure "went soft" when pushing it down the pipe. I can also feel ever so slightly the "waisting" of the barrel at the spot.

My question is what is this rifle worth in this condition?

I have included some pics of the rifle to give an idea of the condition. I am unable to get a nice photo of the inside of the barrel at the stretched spot.

Thanks for your time.

The bulge is probably from the rifle being fired with a real oily bore. The bullet leaves the case and starts down the bore pushing a small amount of oil in front of it. Then the pressure of the firing gases overcomes the resistance of the oil, POP, it jumps past the oil as fluids will not compress. Unless someone is looking for a factory model 70 and has a barrel to replace it, I think it is worth the sum of it's parts. The stock is worth $250-$300 if in good shape and unmessed with( recoil pad added or inletted for peep sight). The action with bolt is probably worth $300 to a guy who wants to build a pre 64 sporter if it isn't messed with. Sights, floorplate, trigger guard etc. are also fairly easily sold. Or you could sell the whole rifle, telling the buyer its faults for $600 or $700. My 2 cents.

The action is worth $600-$650. Some guys will pay money for the assorted bits and pieces but you should consider that gravy. I'd consider Davey's offer and at least feet it shooting again.

Or have it rebored to 9.3x62

I didn't think the actions were worth that much. The reboring thing is a good idea but why not just go to .30/06? From .277 to .308 should clean up.

As above, a solid pre-64 action is $600-$650. The stock may bring $200+ on Ebay if you run into the right buyer.

The rifle as it sits? $750'ish. It is a case where you may get more by parting it out.

All of which was said above, this is just me concuring! :)

I did! Then guy #2 tried to sell his wares.

All yours Dave. Sell your spare barrel, then I will sell you mine in 6 months with a healthy markup when you realize how much better you feel having it in reserve! :D

What years are the actions you have for sale? Some years are more sought after than others.

I will pay you top dollar for an unmolested stock in good condition with the original butt plate. If they are beat up or refinished in any way they are worth about the $50 you paid for the one you bought on the EE.

M70

Here's a thought. Why not have a gunsmith cut and re-crown the barrel back of the bulge and re-attach a sight (or not)? That way you still have about a 22" barrel and be back in business. Doesnt sound like there's any real "collector" value anyway.
