Price madness? or what am I missing

There's 2 types of gun people.

Thems that owns milsurps.

And thems that don't, but want to, but just don't know it yet.

Just make sure you are in the right category.

I grabbed an SKS years ago when they were still $200.

Now i'm looking for a quality (surplus) bolt action, think I'm going to go for a Yugo or Swedish Mauser. What price range should I be looking at for those?

Can't go wrong with a nice Swedish Mauser (M96 or M38). You can still find them for around $700-900 currently. Some guys are trying to push $1100 or $1200 if they got a nice one but I would see if they come down because that is pretty high even for a nice example.

You can still find decent Yugo Mausers for around the same range. They are another great milsurp rifle and great to carry in the bush.

My personal preference...a Swedish M38. But the Swede Mausers are going up in price quick.

M38 is also what I think I have narrowed it down to. I like the shorter OAL and have heard good things about these Swedish rifles and the 6.5*55 round.

Am I deluded to think there is not going to be some buyer's remorse in the next 12 months at these prices or is the same economic model as $1,000,000 Vancouver fixer upper bungalows. Or maybe it's all just "funny money".

If you can buy a $1 Million fixer upper bungalow in Vancouver, then you have access to some pre-CoVid stimulus time machine. But yah, we agree on the insanity. It’s just much worse than you thought. :)

What do folks think of a $900 SKS? I saw one yesterday - to be fair it was an unrefurbed '49 in excellent condition, but still - $900?

Might have been the one I checked over yesterday as well at me LGS. It was a Tula made unit which be desirable for SKS fans. Nice rifle, but the greed machine is in full swing these days on all goods & services. Fookin' overcrowded we be.
:(

Good choice. More often than not they are still in great shape and the bores are in excellent condition. That, and 6.5x55 is fairly easy to find (at least around here). I don't think you will be disappointed.

It’s sad but milsurps are a rich collector’s game now. The days of getting a low cost but good quality rifle and ammunition to develop your musketry skills are over.

There’s still some good deals to be had on sporterized rifles if you shoot cast bullets.

Not surplus, but Ithaca 37's are still a bargain! Winchester 94's and older Marlin's were also pretty good bargain buys up until maybe 5 years ago.

True, cheap and plentiful surplus ammo is also a thing of the past....

Lovely birch stock, fantastic metal - but a $900 SKS? The thing that bugs me is that I've said that before and the guns I said it about went through the stratosphere.

Government printed money out of thin air to service fraudulent pandemic = your funny dollars buy a lot less.

Inflation is not 3% but closer to 15% IMO.

There are collectors and shooters

Collector prices will be all over the place based on 100 factors. (what's cool right now, how well the economy is doing, did a big shipment just flood the market etc.)

Shooters just want something inexpensive that goes bang. We regularly look at what a brand new gun that has similar features would go for.
e.g. SKS. a brand new NR, mid size caliber, semi auto is over $1k. so id be willing to pay up to 60% of new gun price to get something used that is known to be pretty reliable. so a $600 SKS shooter grade seems pretty reasonable then.

if new gun prices keep going up, expect mil-sup to follow. why wouldn't they???

Ancient Chinese Proverb from Kung Fu:

Grasshopper,

When you can snatch the pebble from my hand, it’s time for you to get
off the Internet and go out into the real world looking for $99.00 M1
Garands by the dozen!

Look at the bright side, value went up, not down....
