2 years ago I was purchasing 8lb powder containers for $150 - $170 and that was when it was scarce to find anything. I was looking at increasing my supply and was a bit surprised it had gone up 60% to $270 now that there is more availability. I figured it would be higher with the Canadian US dollar exchange rate. I wonder it the CAN/US exchange rate levels out again will the price of powder come down ... Or is that just a stupid dream.

Paid $190 + tax for 2 8lb jugs of H4895 - trying to trade one for an 8 lb jug of pistol powder, seems they are gone the way of the unicorn .
New price is 250 a jug.

I would really like someone to explain the math to me, it can't be the exchange rate. 8lb'ers are 200 ish US so 260$ CDN. That's retail. There is no way (or at least I highly doubt it) the CDN importers are paying US retail pricing for their powder from the suppliers.
I get it, there is shipping and import fees I'm sure. But I would really love to see the actual numbers on those, just so I know how much I'm actually getting raped.

When I was in Ohio this past Christmas, I saw 8 lbers going for $165 US regular price, not on sale.

Gas prices fluctuate inexplicably...... people keep on buying gas.
Internet providers start charging fees for bandwidth...... people just pay more.
Cell phone providers overcharge and monopolize the industry...... people keep paying.

I think the new greed based pricing that has arisen over the last 15 years is just filtering into more areas...... shooting ammo and components is a natural fit for this type of exploitative pricing. Changes in commodity costs or fluctuations in exchange rates are often brought into the discussion but they are mostly a deflection from the new reality. Charge more and if people keep on buying then life is good........

When I moved back to Canada from the USA in 2002 I was shocked at how high powder prices had gone. High 30's and low 40's seemed the norm. The dollar was worth about $0.65.

Ten years later the Canadian dollar had moved up to par with the US and powder could frequently be found in the mid to high 20's.

I see it all the time in many areas, there are always those that say the price "will never go down". I think they are the type that just love to complain about things (Everything. All the time.)

Inflation also aids the illusion that the price never goes down. It does seem that prices go up quickly when ever there is any sort of economic justification and then are slow to go the other ways when conditions change or worries in the market prove false.

that cant be. i'm told daily that inflation is a benign 1.5%. dangerously close to deflationary. The bank of Canada, the government of canada and every mainstream media outlet would lie, would they?

don't know where you guys are paying $50+ a pound, the average out here is $40

Where in Calgary are you buying at an average of $40? Maybe the stuff that doesn't sell... H4350, Varget, 4831SC etc are all DAMN expensive around here, and that's IF you can find any. And $270 for 8# is also NOT the norm.... Upwards of $300 is the norm now if able to find any. :)

Anyway, let us know where in CGY you buy good powder at $40. LOL

Funny how often I hear people in Alberta saying how awful Ontario is and how glad they are not to live here but I can drive down the street and buy most Hodgson powders for $31 to $35 a pound, today. Yep... sucks to be in ontario.

2 years ago I paid $209+tx for an 8LB jug of IMR 8208 XBR from a local store.
2 months ago I went to Higginson Powder and bought another 8LB jug of XBR for $266+tx.
Yesterday I was on the Higginson site and the price is now $312+tx.
I have no clue where prices will be heading but I know where they were.

Prices are one problem-availability of powder is another matter altogether.
I don't understand why IMR powder being produced here in Ontario is very often unobtainable in 8lb containers.I don't think I'v seen any for last 2-3 years(shotgun type powder at least).

Coreyd, again, most probably the stuff nobody wants. Cheapest powder I have seen anywhere in the country for an 8# of H4350 is $280 and that was in Ontario. And they sold out of it pretty quickly. So where you are buying it for $31 is beyond me... For the "wanted" powders anyway.
