Primers are more powerful than a hand grenade

So this is another one of those "Stuff I heard at a gun counter".

The claim: "10 small rifle primers have the explosive force (energy) of a hand grenade".

I just kind of stared at him for a moment, trying to figure out if the logic is valid or not. 10 primers in an encapsulated metal ball exploding.. would that be enough to fragment with the same force as a grenade detonator?
I honestly didn't know and I didn't say anything. I've seen 2-3 SPP go off at once, and that led to a short panic attack in the reloading room. I would guess that 100 of them in a pack would be a wild experience, especially if it was encased in metal.
I'm not condoning a test or anything, but has anyone (probably from the United States) tried anything like this? I haven't really gone through the google results yet. :)

Negative, 10 small rifle primers are not as powerful as a hand grenade.

There are 2 basic formulas to take under consideration

C13 Hand grenade has a charge of 0.4 Pounds of Composition B + Initiation system which equates to an approximate NEQ (Net Explosive Quantity) of 2,835 Grains x the REP (Relative Explosive Power)

10 x small rifles primers would have probably 10 grains NEQ and a REP which would be lower

How much explosive in 10 primers?
How much explosive in a grenade's bursting charge? How much explosive in the grenade's detonator?
Answer is pretty obvious.

I've never tried it, but I'd call that gun counter bs. I guess I need to work on my imagination, cause I don't know how people come up with this stuff.

I measured out the priming compound of a primer and it was under 1 grain of of weight, I think around 0.7 gr.

If 10 primers was as powerful as a hand grenade, do you really think all militaries would continue to use LARGE, heavy, substandard grenades? come on now, you should have laughed in their face at the stupidity of the statement.

MAYBE 10 small rifle primers has the same force as the detonator in the grenades which ignites the actual explosive charge (which makes the actual "boom" and causes the grenade to fragment)....

Sometimes a primer in a Lee AutoPrime (hand primer with a magazine) goes off. Happened to me. Blew up the tool.

When I called Lee they said I was lucky because sometimes the primer causes the other primers in the try (100 to 200) to detonate, too. They did not mention anything about dying.

Heart attacks are deadly....lol

So what? Just wear your safety glasses at the reloading bench.
Items can be dangerous if mishandled, so can a truck or a microwave oven.
IMHO it does not do us any good to publically fret about what ifs. Left wing lieberal haters absolutely thrive on this kind of outrageous claim propaganda.

The weight helps when throwing in the wind.

I didn't see this coming, waaaay out of left field, waaay out.

Idiotic statement.
Comparing explosive force of 0.0000001 Kg of primer comp with about 0.2 Kg of Comp B plus the detonator inside of a pre-fragmented steel casing is laughable.
Even if you had 3000 primers and set them all off at once somehow..
Just....no.

Had a dillon 1050 primer tube stack detonate on me once several years back. Had about 60 primers in the tube at the time. The primer at the bottom fell incorrectly into the primer slider, and was pinched while pulling the handle, igniting it. The bottom 40 or so primers in the tube detonated, and the top 20, along with the plastic primer tube rod, were embedded in my rafters.

Detonated approx 4x the number of primers described by that guy, in a semi enclosed state, and did not suffer any injury. Many gallons of poo came out, but no injury thanks to safety glasses.

That's a joke. The lee explosion shield for the loadmaster/pro 1000 is a piece of thin mild steel, and it'll stop an explosion of up to 100 primers, small or large, rifle or pistol.

A li-ion 6 cells laptop battery has more energy than a grenade though.

The grenades we had during the Viet Nam war had a primer to light the fuse on the detonator.

In high school in the 1960s we lived next to a Marine Sargent Major who brought home the upper portion of the grenade pictured above.

He was teaching his two sons how to throw grenades in the back yard. Everything was going fine until the detonator didn't spit along its length when it exploded. When the detonator went off it came uncrimped and flew between the three of them and hit their sliding glass door behind them leaving a spider web cracks an BB size hole in the glass. And this ended the training session on how to throw a grenade when the Marines wife started yelling at her husband.

Good on OP for holding tongue because they didn't actually "know"... I could use a dose of that on occasion. I'll bet you're hoping it comes up again too.

I like to listen to fellas argue over the best round for deer.

.270 Winchester... Nothing to argue about.

If we ever have a contest about what we could do "in the good old days." this would be my candidate for the win...

This Marine Sargent Major was on Guadalcanal in WWII and hated the U.S. Navy and my dad was a Navy Chief. The only way I could play with the Marines sons was I always had to be the Jap soldier. I can proudly tell you I was and good Japanese soldier and was killed on every island in the Pacific several times, war is hell.
