Problem with mounting a scope

Blaser rings are the same. I use two piece of folded tape under each end to protect the scope tube when I install them. I'm not a fan of the design.

I buy quality stuff and if I'm using the proper sized rings they just snap on over the scope tube.
Don't do any of that lapping stuff.
Never saw a need for it and never had a problem with accuracy when using quality scopes, bases and rings.
I'm sure Warne, Leupold, Swarovsky and Talley know all about machining steel parts.

Yep, they do. Sadly, there are a lot of rifles out there that come right from the factory with scope mounting holes that are not 100% true and aligned with each other and with the bore. "That lapping stuff" increases metal contact making for a more stable mounting job, and corrects for those slight imperfections in scope ring alignment. If I am mounting a scope using 2-piece bases, I always at least try a couple swipes with a lapping tool; you can tell by feel if you need to continue, and it's easy to see your progress by comparing the exposed metal surfaces.

Fyi the diamondback scope is a 30mm tube. Not a 1" tube. 1" is 25.4mm which is why that ring appears to be perched on top and not sliding over top. You will wreck that scope using those rings. I had the same problem two weeks ago.... had a set of 1" rings already and at 10pm went to mount the scope to find they don't fit....

Just noticed this is an older model of the diamondback.... I maybe wrong on it being a 30mm tube... a quick google of your model should tell you which tube it is.... or if you still have the box.

Leupold doesn't mention anything about that stupid top ring anywhere. I was the same way, Bought them and went to install and I thought they were made wrong.

Finally found a Leupold YouTube video and he has a little tool and spreads the ring enough to fit over top.

I've pushed them down over a Redfield scope, Scratched it quite a bit, Dont do it lol

Actually the new diamondbacks come as a 1" tube scopes

I’ve always had this issue with the PRWs no matter the scope and 1” or 30mm rings. First time I scratched my scope.... the trick is to seat them on top of the scope and press down in the middle of the ring so that it uniformely goes over the outer most dimension of the scope. If you get one side or the other too much or push on the front or rear of the rings, the corners will dig in and scratch. Also when removing, take out the screws completely before trying to remove the top half.

Take a couple of Allen keys or something similar, stick one into one of the screw holes on either side of the ring top so that the shaft just barely protrudes out the bottom of the hole. Pinch the tops of these "levers" together with thumb and forefinger. Takes only a bit of pressure to spread the opening in the ring top enough for it to drop right over the scope tube without scratching or even touching it.

And, it should go without saying, but...yes, use 1-inch rings for 1-inch scopes and 30mm rings for 30mm scopes.

You have to slide the top of the rings over to mate them together. Lay the top on the scope right beside the bottom, then push it over so that the two rings mesh.
