I have a brand new MP40 with less than 100 rounds through it and I am havig significant problems with it. In my first three mags of Winchester ammo, I had three misfires. When I tap and rack it, the round that ejects has a light primer strike ad clearly has the marking of the striker dragged across the face of the primer and cartridge face. The next round out of the mag will not feed into the chamber.

Tonight I shot the pistol again and I had quite a few misfires. In one case, this happened and I tried to feed the next 6 round out of the mag into the chamber and none feed into the chamber properly - the slide would not close all of the way. I stripped the gun down and then it chambered from the magazine with no problems - but there was no indication that there was anything in the chamber which was preventing the slide from fully closing.

Fired casings have a very sharp ridge on the primer which is noticable (and sharp) when you pull your finger across it. The primer is upsetting into the dimpled identatnion on the face of the bolt.

I will be calling S&W in the AM - I am hoping that Worters Gunworks in Chatham is a warranty repair depot.

Needless to say, I am really disappointed - this is the second new firearm that I have bought this fall and both have defects. One of the reasons I bought the pistol is all of the favourable reviews I read about it.

Update Called Wortners this morning - striker had to be re - radiused as was starting to sharpen into a point - however, still wont work right as SW didnt install a plastic sleeve around the firing pin - so still waiting for it to come from S&W

UPDATE #2 Finally got the call last week from George - pistol was manufactured without installing the "castle bushing". Apparantly is a part that doesnt show on the parts diagram according to George. Took 5 months to get S&W to get the part back, but now its home - off to the range tomorrow night!

From the sounds of it the striker channel is dirty ......might want to check before sending the gun away also might want to look here http://www.mp-pistol.com/ for more info

On the other hand. I took my Glock and fired it until the barrel glowed. And the fat grips did not impede impeccable function!

Tee hee hee.

My M&P40 work like a swiss watch. S&W has a fantastic warranty and should take care of your problem. No matter what brand of firearm you purchase, defects happen.

Sounds like a striker system failure, or a dirty striker system.
Could be crap in the channel from the factory.

I would search for M&P forums around the internet. If it were MY gun I would strip it right down to the basics, clean, examine and lubricate. Then try again at the range.

Called S&W = heading for Wortner's in Chatham. Dont think the channel is dirty as the primer strikes on the fired rounds are almost piercing the primer. And that doesnt explain the chambering problem. Hopefully will get it fixed up and shooting.

And I wondered how long it would take get get a Glock comment.....

Should of bought a GLOCK.....LOL.....couldn't resist

The early problem for 40 cal Glocks as I remember was bang, bang, kaboom. I'd take a striker problem over a kaboom any day. In fact I'd take almost anything over a kaboom.

I have thrown out a bunch of .40cal brass with the case bulged where it is not supported, the primers all had the Glock firing pin mark.

I called S&W ad its going to Wortners - a buddy of mine and I looked at it today under good light. The striker is definately causing the problem - it looks almost pointed and is very marked up - when we had the slide out, the striker is hitting the sides or bottom of the firing pin opening on the breech face when it releases.

S&W asked me if I had dry fired it - truthfully I have not dry fired it more than 12 - 15 times. As soon as I get an ATT, it will be heading to Chatham.

Check your Winchester ammo. No longer allowed on our local range due to case failures in pistol and rifle ammo and countless duds.
