Project guns - Savage Pump and Rem single shot!! update 4/4/10!

Both look very nice , good job

I have just finished the metal on an old Cooey of mine and, like farmer47 said, Cambodian Tire is a great source for all kinds of paint. I used semi-gloss black. After sanding with a med sanding sponge I applied three light coats of this Tremclad semi-gloss black. When dry I then baked it at 200F for a bit and presto, fairly hard finish thats easy to touch up. All of the screws I cleaned up with some 320 grit sandpaper then used some cold blueing. My wood will be sanded to 320 grit then finished with a satin finishing wax. If you wanted you could try a camo paint scheme using the Krylon stuff mentioned. Check out some of the threads on refinishing for more ideas.

What kind of paint did you use exactly?

thanks

Stock first, then barrel and don't forget to give yourself an extra 1/2-1" just to be on the safe side. Krylon Camo paints are great and if you scratch it you just add more colour, easy fix. Parkerizing is a phosphate treatment that is what is on most military weapons. You can get do it yourself kits. Armacoat is a coloured two part paint for your gun. It has to be sprayed with either an airbrush or small spray gun. It is sold by a member on here.

My reasoning is that i simply thought they would be fun to build and shoot. turns out that they are and they are! I got a good deal on these two and went for it. Some people like to share knowledge and some people seem interested in these kind of projects so thats why i started the thread (give and take ;)). Why are there so many? The simple answer is because this is what people like right now. Same reason why the whole made-in-china double barrel whatever hype is going on.

About the barrel: So thats what that is?? simply a QC (or lack of) problem? wow!

OH and: I really need to go watch the Book of Eli!

yeah ive heard of off-center bores but never seen one that bad.

my only tip for you guys making these cut-off PGs is:
is there enough meat in the PG to recess the stock bolt a bit? having it protrude from the back of the gun seems like asking for trouble. ideally you should recess it so the bolt is flush or slightly below the surface.

the speedfeed style pistol grip with its unique shape is purportedly the most comfortable style of PG to shoot - it looks like you could easily shape most cut-off stocks to this shape.

The grip on the 16ga works really well. Havent tried the 12ga yet, as you can see the bolt is sticking out a good 3 inches! I am just going to look for a new, shorter, bolt in Rona. After finishing the metal and wood on the guns i'll patch up the bolt holes with plastic wood, and then finish that too.

cant wait to shoot that 12 ga by the way!

Leave the bolts recessed but accessible, you may want to do some changes later on.

Good idea to leave the bolt head exposed. I'm just spitballing here, but perhaps you could ram some cork (or similar) into the recess and shave it off to shape? Would be easy to pop out and replace if/when that becomes necessary.

Cheers.

sell them both and buy a grizzly, what you are trying todo is like trying to make a racecar from an old studabaker

Really good work man, i have the same single shot in 12gauge
the barrel is already cut down to 19"
was thinking about cutting the stock but im not fully decided on whether i should or not..
would a spare stock be hard to find for this model?

With a 19" barrel, you'll have to watch out how short you cut the stock. It might need to be an inch or so longer than what i did with the stock.

No idea about the spare stock question, I havent looked/asked around..

The odd shape of the barrel is normal, a smith told me he sees this all of the time in rifles and shotguns alike, they are usually ground in the factory to look straight. So nothing a little dremel stone won't fix.
