Project RatRod: SKS shorty

Supernova, have you ever posted how you got the bayonet off and moved the front site? I'd really like to do this and I'm not a complete ass when it comes to metalwork. Is it just cross pins and mallet work? Did you have to file a new pin slot on the barrel?

Local place still has some refurbs for about $170 I might pick one up to tweak on. Thanks.

The bayonet lug/fsb came off by drifting out the two pins, heating it with a propane torch and using a brass drift/bfh on the bayo lug. I clamped the barrel in my workmate using the gas block as a stop. Then I cut it to length to give me about 1/2" of exposed barrel, opened it up a little as the barrel and FSB taper to friction fit, then filed a new pin slot.

I forgot to mention that I'm really curious about your peep site! I have one on a lever and I love it! way better than conventional open sites. Keep us informed about range results! i wanna know if it helped in grouping! might have to get a $75 one from marstar! :evil:cause that'll make the better half happy!!
Again nice job on the sks!

My last range trip was cut short by the second thunderstorm in a row that the weather network forgot to mention. The peep worked great and I had some decent groups around 3-4" @ 100 yds. I'll be cutting the sight protector down like an AK as the ring obstructs my FOV a little. I've got 5 rds that I pulled the bullets and weighed out 20.0 gr surplus powder for each and seated the bullets but I didn't have time to get to those or my .308 thanks to Mr. Thunderstorm. The slant comp works well and the trigger was great. Typical of an SKS it has yet to have a single malfunction. Hopefully I can get the SKS and a few others out again soon for a full range trip.

Thanks super. One of those with a Kwik Rail and a red dot would be a great deer gun for dense brush.

Bumping this because it's one of the tastier SKS mods I've seen.

Intrigued by the trigger over-travel mod. Wonder what guys think of this trigger mod? Kinda makes sense to me.

Very nice and clean mod. You said that you purchased the AK comps from Italy - could you please share the link ?

supernova,

Now that you've lived with this rifle for awhile, how are you feeling about your trigger over-travel mod ?

Would you do it again? Do you feel it makes for better operation ?

Seriously considering doing this to my SKS's. Seems like a useful improvement.

Thanks for the insight and ideas supernova.

I find there is nothing one can really do to bring the SKS under 4 moa, but there are several very useful mods to make it more efficient or handle better.

Nice SKS but I wouldnt call it Ratrod. Its too clean. A ratrod would have used a nut welded to the rear for a peep. There is no rust, or parts from another gun.

It doesn't need to be rusty to be a ratrod. It also doesn't need obscure parts. And it does have parts from 2 different rifles. A ratrod can be clean and well thought out as much as it can be rough and untamed. The whole point is f**k the rules and building it the way you want. The moment you try to tell someone how it should be done your way, you've lost what its all about IMO.
