Project "Scrap Metal"

long story short, I adopted a Russian SKS rifle that has been corroded and let go far beyond what I would consider usable (hence my project name scrap metal). The barrel is corroded and pitted, almost all parts are rusty and show signs of corrosion. I had to use a punch and hammer to remove the gas tube piston :(.

That being said, I have shot this rifle in current condition (don't judge me). I was surprised to find that it is still accurate and functional.

I would like to make this clear before I get into describing my project, I am not a gunsmith. I have however done what I consider a fair share of research to achieve a clear understanding of exactly how this rifle functions along with practices used to complete basic modifications.

My plan is to do anything i can dream up to this rifle. Starting with a trigger job and modifying the gas tube for recoil reduction. I am willing to do almost anything to this rifle. Basically its going to be my guinea pig, and when I'm done I plan on scraping it.

Got any ideas? let me know ill probably do them.

Here are some pics so you can understand where I'm at.

Looks like a shooter!
-Practice: trigger job, sanding/bluing, wood refinishing, metal polishing, drill and tap for scope mount, could practice parkerizing as well
-do the gas tube mod, try to remove front sight and bayonet lug
-perform torture tests with mud, water and dirt (maybe even drive it over with a car)
-Shoot corrosive and never clean it! See if it corrodes even further

I had rifles a lot worse come into my shop. That rifle would clean up nicely with a bit of fine steel wool and oil, maybe a little brass scraper. The chromed bore should have protected the rifling.

I agree with tiriaq that rifle would clean up nice I think. maybe parkerise it or duracoat it. clean the stock and refinish it.

i would be intrested in seeing the mod that makes it eject out the side instead of up (its in the DIY sticky). a vid of ejecting before and after would be cool.

It actually doesn't look too bad. Gas tubes and pistons are cheap and easy to get as are most other parts. A wire wheel will take care of the worst of the rust.
That being said, if you want to modify it, go for it. I made my own gas regulator and have toned down the action to the point where the casing only fly out a couple of feet, smoothing the recoil. Unfortunately the site does not allow me to post attachments to show you.

WARNING! NOT MEANT SERIOUSLY:...convert her to full auto, that will shake the rust off :D

Now rather serious: Been there,too...I once got an SKS that was taken care off on the outside, but rusted solid on internals.I got it clean again, drilled the gastube, did yoopers trigger (sear) work, shortened the empty triggerpull, put a setscrew in the rear of the triggerguard as a triggerstop, replaced sear spring, built a coate style scope mount and drilled it onto reciver, recrowned the muzzle.
...this is by far my ugliest SKS,BUT: also by far my most accurate one,so I'm sure not scrapping this one.If you need pics,pm me with your email...
And if you reach the point where you would scrap it: You still can sell it to me instead-no SKS is a lost case! ;)

Jwirecom109,holy drillbit, what a beauty!!!! Did you polish the bluing down or did you get a chrome job done ( If so,who does and what is the $$)? I am truly impressed! Never saw a SKS that shiney! Good work!

What's with the rear sight and immediate area, and the barrel under the handguard not being "chrome"? Photoshop fail?

That's the Red Army engineering for you. Take a old surplus rifle, slop cosmoline on it and bury it in a pail of borch under a chicken coop.

20 years later its still ready for revolution!

Viva la Resistance:D

I never thought of a torture test...... Just might have to do that!
Ok how to torture this....
-bury it in sand, dig up and fire.
-Sumberge in muddy water, uncover and fire.
-continuose fire with X amount of rounds.
-drive over it....
-drag it behind the truck on logging roads.
-......?????? Suggestions?

Once I find a sandblasting cabinet I can use that's got aluminum oxide in it or when I can afford a compressor and a cabinet I do plan on arma-coating it.

I'm thinking of trying to make an adapter system so it can take cz mags.

those all sound good! torture test it, restore it, then mod it!
I will also suggest setting it on fire WHILE shooting it!! (front of the wood stock/handguard) make sure to get it all on video though

crap, now I want my own beater SKS to torture test

Looks rough but nothing a Russian cant handle.
Id fix her up, shoot the hell out of it.
Dont scrap it,... sell it on the EE and at least get some cash back for a parts gun..;)

Its definately useable, I just dont like its current condition. I'm going to modify it to my hearts content (within the laws) and if I make it unusable, I will dispose of it accordingly (after doing some salvaging).
