Promag M1A/M305 Precision Stock PICTURE Review

So my stock showed up in the mail today. Just finished fitting it and it's nice and tight.

Even though it is a "drop-in fit" this stock still needs to be fitted to the rifle. First off the left and right side around the action need to be opened up so the receiver can be fully seated in the stock.

Next I found that the front sling swivel stud protruded too far into the stock and hit the gas cylinder. I just removed the stud for now. It will have to be ground down to sit flush.

Finally the trigger fitting pads have to be filed down until the trigger guard is able to fully close. This step is explained in the fitting instructions that come with the stock.

Overall I'm very impressed with this stock. Now that the fitting is done it's rock solid. The only cosmetic defect I found is the rough patch next to the trigger area in the last picture.

Thanks for sharing the info, but I am still confused about one thing... can/should these stocks be bedded?

once mine arrives I'll be putting it on the bench and testing several bedding materials for compatability with the plastic and will be giving mystic precision..... and cgn , my findings.

I wonder how the stock fits with a UTG Tri-Rail(which i have); also is there enough of a gap between the stock and the front ferrule?
Cant wait to hear more reviews, that stock would look pretty sweet on my 305 :D

phistapher, Great looking set up and thanks for the install info.

I am very happy to hear that the receiver area and trigger guard area ARE tight. This really helps hold the action inplace without the need of complicated intervention. Lateral inletting can be generous in some stocks allowing the action to shake left and right. Not so easy to bed for that.

How is the fit between the action 'legs' and the stock? When you put the action into the stock, is there much forward and aft movement - no trigger group? Just hold the receiver down and push/pull it in the stock. There should be just a hint of movement so you can take the action out of the stock but it shouldn't slide around.

Having to tighten the trigger guard pad area is usually an extra step in the bedding process to keep that trigger group/action interface tight. Getting it oversized from the factory is a blessing. You can now make it a perfect fit. Like it.

How is the fit on the front ferrule? Can you wiggle the gas cylinder vs the stock?

I wondered if that swivel stud would be too long. Now I know. 10secs with a file and it is all better.

So far, it looks very good for fit and function.

Looks bad ass!!

I think if the rest of the gun was duracoated in a matte black, it would complete the " look " to a tee.

Looking forward to the range reports.

Thanks Jerry my stock arrived today :rockOn:
It looks great , I had to file a tiny bit off of the stock in the area under the trigger as per the instructions provided and with a couple minutes of file work its in and feels great!!!
No other work required to get the stock in place. And no front swivel issue either.
I am very impressed with it so far everything looks better than in the pics I saw previously.
I really like the grooves in the handguard as they make a perfect spot for my finger tips and the adjustability of the stock makes it fit me perfect .

Remove some stock material the same width as the trigger on both sides
It is a snug fit as I squeezed the receiver and trigger group together abit with my hands and as the instuctions said the gap under the receiver disappeared once it popped into place. I did the trigger function test after installation
The schematic is a nice touch (on the back of package)

Thanks again..cant wait to get it out of the house...my family is starting to worry about me as I am walking around the house with it..lol

Mystic,

Even without the trigger group I can't feel any movement in any direction. I have to really pull up on the heel to get the receiver out. As far as putting the receiver back in, with it all oiled up nice it can be done by hand. With a fit much tighter you would need to use a mallet to get it seated.

The fit on the front ferrule is very tight. It is oversized compared to my USGI stock.

I just went for a walk and tried a few rounds out of my rifle, I found the 5 round mag fits flush with the magwell and it was a comfortable spot to carry it.Not much surface area to grab when removing the mag though it can be done from the bottom , it was easiest pushing the mag out from the top (just dont release the bolt ..lol)

I am 6ft and found that the butt pad set about an inch out fit me .The overall feel of the stock was nice and tight and it was a little heavier than my USGI stock , The adjustability of it is great and the whole stock is well made .I am very pleased with it ... It may pale in comparison to a real JAE but for the money its a great deal..just like the m-305,s ..damm I need another M-14 now for my USGI stock that I took off..lol

And on the walk home carrying my new baby my dog lifted a deer..great day !!:50cal:

Thanks again Jerry these should sell like crazy

Don't oil it. Use a mallet and gentle persuation :HR:

tighter better.

I was hoping that would be the report because that takes care of a huge PITA hurdle in bedding M1A stocks. And if it can't rattle around, it can't wear either.

CR, you do realize our friends down south don't know that 5rds mags were made for this rifle :)

Also, being able to adjust the trigger guard height is perfect. Now you can get a rock solid fit without alot of fuss. Great design feature I didn't know about. This might be one of a few M1A stocks that doesn't need bedding????

Very nice rig and glad that you are enjoying it.

Let's see some accuracy results compared to other stocks.

mine came today
thanx a tonne Jerry ;)

mine required removal of material at the forward end of the receiver where the hand guard ends.
reshaping of the "ferrule" as my gas assembly/front band would not fit over the stocks plastic ferrule. And a shortening of the ferule as it was making flush contact with the gas band. 15 thou is the minumum gap required here.

i have not finished the above mods as i am working very slow to ensure precise fit.

trigger pads on my stock will definately need attention as well.
*** these stocks have a small recess for a USGI length connector pin  so watch for this when you are installing. I'm thinking a small drill hole to support some JB weld will be in oder to prevent chinese connector pins from walking like they do in USGI stocks.

my overall impression is very good. This stock is solid, although to me the beefy front end is a little wierd in it's contrast to the slender buttstock end.
the cheekrest and buttpad adjustments are excellent.
the grip is a bit wierd for my hand but overall pretty nice.

a UTG railed handguard will NOT fit these stocks unless running it without the side rails.... so it would be the UTG monorail hehehe and you lose the "tri rail" feature

I'm not done fitting mine but at this point i would say trying to bed one of these stocks is probably unnecessry as the internal receiver to stock fit is superb.

Some of these stocks will require fitting to mate with some actions and i would say so far that promag's claim of "no gunsmithing drop in fit" is not really on par with the stock i received.

overall, for the money these stocks cost...... i would say we have a winner, but do be prepared to make some adjustments with a set of files.
I'll post further review once I've had a chance to finish fitting and install. I've been at it for 3.5 hours so far :D

Am I the only one still waiting..........:(

mine only took a couple days due to being located only a few hours drive from mystic...... I would expect shipping to ontario to take at least a week or more. and a word to all those shipping or waiting for parcels...... canada post strike is looming..... my sources say 2 weeks away

Thanks for the report.

I just had a few emails from others and their actions fit in the stock with min fitting. One of them didn't even have to touch the trigger pad.

Gives you an idea of how much these rifle vary in sizing.

At least Promag did the right thing by making important areas bigger. Easy to remove. Not so easy to add.

Glad everyone is happy. Cdn post strike would be very very bad. The next batch of stocks would be getting to me about that time.

That would royally suck....

Gentlemen - we have a winner !

I had been on the fence re this product - I mean how good can a $300 stock be ? Anyway, I jumped in to celebrate the CPC win :) and thanks to Jerry's super fast shipping my Archangel arrived today.

Rather than fcuk about with a Norc, I decided to see what an M1A would fit like - they say it is a precision stock for the M1A right ? so I took the M1A 'Loaded' out of its regular stock, took off the scope and in FOUR MINUTES FLAT had it fitted into the Archangel. I used a rubber mallet to "tap 'er in". The trigger assembly took a fair bit of pressure to get closed but it fitted without the need for any removal of material. The rifle passed function test several times so no re-install required. I put on a cheap Harris knock off bipod, remounted the glass, clicked up 2x on the cheekrest and back 1x on the butt adjustment and she is now good to go. I shall be using it at the range this weekend and will update this post with a report at that time.

Here are some pics:

Says it fits the M1A

And, yes, it does

I am a fan of nice stocks and have two Remington's in AICS - both the 1.5 and 2.0 - and I know what I paid for them. If these guys at Promag make a bolt rifle stock of similar quality then AICS and others may have to do some rethinking. BTW - If anyone wants a M1A fiberglass stock shoot me a PM :)

Cheers,

Bob.
