Proposed legislation change: Prohibit the use of lead shot for the purpose of all hunting in British Columbia

This is worded that all game animals will be shot with monolithic bullets. This is not just birds. It appears to be for deer, moose, bear and elk as well. Toss those thousands of lead bullets and buy mono bullets to save the planet. Bet the FN don't have to abide by that rule.
That isn't what the proposed regulation says. This is a shotgun ammunition restriction, with more than 8 pellets in a load.

Some of the comments here are pretty disheartening. Sure non lead bullets are better for the environment but so are 15 min cities and living off beans and rice. How willingly people will roll over and give up freedoms for thinly veiled agendas is shameful. If we are truly that concerned about the environment there are much more impactful things that can be done.

Truth is, it’s just another way to advance an agenda.

Although I'm aware of it and have seen it on the internet, I've never actually seen or used dead coyote buckshot but I'll take your word for it.

Yes, sure you can hunt grouse with steel shot.

The real problem with this proposed regulation is why? What will it actually accomplish? if it won't have a pronounced positive effect, why do it? It's the same as gun laws, really. Don't accomplish anything but looks good.

I’m just sharing personal experience that it’s really no big deal switching to lead as there’s practically zero difference in hunting success. 👍

Non of these guns can handle steel for several different reasons

I really don't know if I would be comfortable shooting bismuth in an antique muzzleloading gun.

There were reports that the UK was going to ban lead shot for hunting; some other European countries are as well. BC just seems to be following a trend.
California banned all lead in hunting projectiles (rimfire exemption?) after a California condor turned up poisoned with an ingested bullet in its gizzard. From a scavenged gut pile.

There is also the push to ban lead from fishing gear.

There are only 3 or 4 jurisdictions in the entire world that ban lead shot for hunting birds other than waterfowl.

The backgrounder paper the province provides shows clearly the people in charge of this proposal are not in any way qualified.

This sentence clearly shows the ignorance: Despite existing restrictions, waterfowl, raptors and other scavengers continue to be exposed to lead when they feed on animals that contain lead shot or fragments.

Yes, read that again, they claim that waterfowl are exposed to lead when the feed on dead animal. Yes I know ducks will chow down on the occasional snail or tadpole but I have yet to see on eating a dead grouse.

Remember, these are the same pimply-faced government interns that wanted to ban scopes on cross-bows last year.

Like most things that originate on the lower mainland it is performative politics.
Some aspect of life without a regulation? Can’t have that. Everytime they can come up with something annoying they do.
Have to keep the low IQ dipper voters happy because the govt can show them that things are being done.
What a bunch of ####ing morons

My feedback...

The ban on lead shot for waterfowl hunting was based on much higher concentrations of shooting, and thus lead shot, being present at waterfowl hunting locations. The concern was that waterfowl would pick up shot off the bottom of waterways as a byproduct of feeding. Upland game hunting is significantly different because it does not take place from fixed locations, This creates a situation where a hunter may discharge once or twice from a given position before having to move along to another position to locate more game. The dispersal of shot across the landscape results in significantly less shot being present in any given location. This decreases the likelihood that game birds will pick up shot as a part of their feeding, as upland game birds are visual feeders and will not pick up shot as it doesn't resemble their feed sources.
