So I'm in the market for an AR style rifle and am thinking 7.62x39 is a good choice cause ammo is cheep and I have other rifles in 7.62x39, would be great to hear a few opinions before I decide though.

The only con is that is still restricted. ;P

I love my 7.62 upper, it's a ton of fun, just requires a little more dedicated cleaning with surplus ammo.

I too was considering a x39. I wonder how the Windham x39 is? I haven't found any reviews on it.
I'd primarily want to use surplus steel case ammo. Not sure if that would case issues.

Shin-Gunto - what make upper are you running?
Are you using surplus steel case ammo?
Lots of rounds?....no issues?

I'm wondering if the bolt issues have been ironed out on the new manufactured x39 AR15's?
For example with pics:

The windham is the gun I'm looking at,
When referring to having to clean more often, does this apply to cheep surplus non corrosive ammo? I run that stuff though the sks all day long and rarely clean it, I geuss the AR platform is a little more finicky?

Itsss awesoommmeeee and cheap to shooot. order a spoon for stripper clips and you are Good 2 go. Recoil is a bit heavier than .223

Personally I am interested in the 7.62 X 39 AR as well in 11"ish format, more "thummmp" for less money. More like a poor man 300ACC.

So those who have run something in x39....can you state make, barrel length, number of rounds, type of ammo if possible, and any issues or likes/dislikes. Thanks guys.

Built my own, tnw barrel and it shoots awesome with norinco non-corrosive.
I had light strikes with surplus, a dedicated build should come with a longer firing pin though
Retrofitted 5.56 bolt is likely where it will fail one day

I was thinking something like a Hyperfire trigger upgrade may help in getting hard primer strikes for the surplus x39 ammo:

Hammer Fall Energy: HIPERTOUCH® features the unique toggle spring functionality that reduces trigger weight, but while doing so, it also increases hammer fall energy by over 35% over the MIL-spec stock design and every trigger upgrade in the market. This permits the shooter to ignite hard MIL and foreign primers as well as hard to ignite 22 rimfire ammunition.

Most triggers have more then enough hammer energy to fire the primer . Exception is std trigger upgraded by the very cost effective JP "Yellow Spring " , which is why the make the "Red Spring" . I also have had issues with some guicci stype triggers like CMC trigger ( no problem with all my Geisslle and Timiny )

The problem is the firing pin protrusion since most 7.62X39 surplus has a relatively deep seated primer ...vs 5.56 which tends to be flush all the time

You can hit the firing pin as hard as you want but when it bottoms out on the shoulder of the pin to tail of the bolt , it will protrude no further

Two solutions is modify a standard AR pin my machining a bit off the shoulders . This is what I always do .

If you don't have access to lathe then you can buy pins pre shortened for 7.62x39 . Lots of suppliers such as :

htt w.blackriflearms.com/AR-762x39-Enhanced-Firing-Pin_p_9.html

Other solution is take a bit off the tail of the bolt . This is what many of the aftermarket 7.62x39 bolts do

You only need about .007 to .010" more so don't get too crazy !

7.7" PWS so far 400 rounds no issues. Romanian surplus, newly made 2014 Chinese ammo non- corrosive. and Czech

Built my own as well, only shoot reloads in it. Very accurate rifle. Only issue I had was with a broken extractor but a "donut" that fits under the extractor spring fixed that. Might try some non-corrosive some day but still have lots of components at the moment. And they won't shoot near as well as the Hornady fmj's with H322.

Just ordered up a windham in 7.62x39, I will let yall know how it shoots, I think will be spending lots of time at the range in the near future.
