Reader says slogan is in poor taste
November 11, 2009
Perhaps as part of all the improvements and preparations that are ongoing for the upcoming G8 Summit, the town of Huntsville would consider suggesting to the owner of this establishment, “Hunters: You kill em, we cut em,” to rephrase their “business advertisement.”

This type of insensitive advertising has no place alongside other merchants in town.

I think it would be socially responsible for the town of Huntsville to insist this slogan be altered to something in better taste.

The butcher replied with

Business owner’s response: We live in Muskoka, where for three weeks out of the year the town pretty much shuts down for hunting. It’s our right to hunt and if somebody’s offended, why not come and talk to me?

If they want to put it in the paper that’s fine.

Any publicity is good publicity. That’s what I do for a living. I’m a butcher.

After this, I noticed he did change his sign to

"Hunters, you drop em we chop em"!

Its refreshing to see someone not give in the voice of an anti!

"I don't patronize your business and I'm offended by the way you advertise to the people who do".

I'm assuming that besides being a self-employed small business owner, Mike Nichols is also a diplomat.

I do not hunt & also do not eat red meat . I have no problem with people who do & I also do NOT have a problem with the sign. What is the difference between harvesting it yourself or buying it at a store. None in my opinion.

Good for the butcher.

I'm still trying to figure out who the sign would be 'insensitive' to. The deer are past caring, I don't see hunters doing anything but laughing...so yeah, you're left with the same group that always wants the world to change for them.
We really need to come up with an island somewhere for these people a la No Escape.

Another "Cidiot" trying to save rural Canada. What part of don't go away mad-just go away, do they not understand.

Cidiot is right! I live in a rural area, raised on a farm, can't stand it when the cidiots live in town and plant a thousand trees on a 40X100 lot, then they move to the country, and CUT DOWN EVERY TREE!! Then they tell me..."You can't hunt there, that's public land!" Or they buy a farm, put a couple donkeys on it, call it a "Horse farm" and then sell it for three times what they paid for it.

Rant over.:sniper:

Do these people have NO sense of humour?!
It's obviously a tongue in cheek statement and means no harm to anyone other than overly sensitive people who desperately need to get a hobby to fill some of their ample free time.

hehe good one! Here its quite obvious when the hunting season starts... Butchers open their big garage doors and you see a f load of deer hanging :)

Mike is a very active hunter himself - both archery and rifle. He does a lot of business butchering wild game. He has some excellent sausage recipes. He's done several of our moose and deer and comes highly recommended. Oh... and another thing, watching him lift the hind quarter of a bull moose to his shoulder and carry it into the cold room is pretty impressive.

The Huntsville area has grown considerably over the past several years and the people moving in aren't country folk. Believe it or not it's not uncommon for the police to be called because someone heard a gunshot during hunting season.
