I was at the cottage doing some ice fishing on the weekend, and catching up on my reading at night, came across an article in Ontario Out of Doors magazine, that states the McGuinty Liberals are in negotiations with the Algonquins to settle a land claims deal over wide sections of the Central eastern part of the province.
This would include pretty much all of Algonquin park, as far East as Ottawa, and south pretty much to Cornwall. It includes a number of sizable communities, and vast acreages of hunting, and fishing territory.
The Liberals are doing this with no public consultation.
Their view apparently is that it will play well, in their power base (Toronto) and they don't care about the area, because it votes Conservative anyway!

Of course, I forgot to bring the Magazine home, but it appeared in the February edition of this year.

Here's the website: http://www.aboriginalaffairs.gov.on.ca/english/negotiate/algonquin/factsheet.asp

This is disturbing news. I belong to a hunt club that has a 99 year lease on 5 acres of crown land just North of Algonquin park in WMU 48. The lease was given out in 1963 & the club has faithfully paid the yearly use fees. As hunters, we should all be concerned about the outcome of these deals with Ontario natives. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I'm so sick of hearing about more handouts to the natives. It's just disgusting that our government doesn't have the balls to stop giving them so much. If you want land, buy it like the rest of us.

So giving them what was theirs from the beginning is a "handout?" Just speaking generally, not sure the specifics of this case.

It would suck if a lot of people couldn't hunt that land anymore. Whenever I read a thread about hunting in Ontario the issue is always "where do I find land?" I'm glad I live somewhere with plenty of crown land within a short drive.

I was under the impression that natives historically have no history of "owning, buying or selling of land".

That only means our system of owing, buying, or selling land in Canada is bogus. They really were here first, and I own a good deal of land so I say that 'honestly', not living in a condo in the city.

I'm far more in favour of giving natives land than tax dollars.

This is a lot more that just a handout IMHO. For the details follow the web link in the original post.

The land that the natives want is currently crown land available to every Canadian & thats how it should stay IMHO. Giving special rights & access to natives isn't democratic IMHO.

Plus it provides jobs for us poor white folks. After a few years of having their land back, we get paid to clean up after them, and maybe reintroduce a few of the species that they have wiped out.

Actually thats factually not correct in some areas. Take Six Nations in Ontario. They have only been in Canada around 180 years. Clearly there were settlers here prior to this bands arrival.

Yet they also have land claims. The rationale of who is here first is often impractical.

Giving away large tracts of land to those who refuse census, refuse to monitor harvests of game and other sustainability controls does not make alot of sense long term.

The parcel of land that is mentioned here is a signifigant part of eastern Ontario.

My understanding of this is that they will not be giving them the land per say, although they may give them some crown (a big concern for me, as I suspect my area to be high on the list). Rather they would get management of it, and the fish and game there on.
Even that way however, it raises considerable concerns for those of us hunting in that area.

Another example of McSquinty giving away something that belongs to everyone in Ontario for reasons of polictical expediency.

It was not theirs from the beginning. It is commonly argued that the current 'Natives' are likely not descendents of the first people making use of this land mass.

ALSO the band of bull#### nations here is a conglomeration of warring tribes that used to STEAL land, and murder members of other tribes. Like Coyotes they are NOT 'native' to the lands in question.

I need to get "Native" status stat. Do they give this away to German Canadian? I WANT SOME FREE LAND TOO..THIS IS NOT FAIR...LOL.
