PSA re: bolt failures in recent import M-14 pattern rifles

I know a couple of guys that bought an 305 with a MIM bolt....including my self....I will say the lugs are full contact and headspace on a on go gauge..just starts to close...shoots good,no issues yet...I am not sure what to fear since I have seen the regular nork bolt on a couple of guns have mis aligned lugs and closes on a no go...let alone a gi bolt doing the same thing..classic Chinese quality, luck of the draw.

I will say the 305 is rough...kinda a piss off to purchase these things within crooked barrels, poor sights and questionable machineing....can’t Blame the importer....we keep buying them!!

My xp is the same as you. Tight goups, no HS issue or markings on the bolt. Runs as good as anything else I've shot. Luck of the draw I guess.

A line was crossed between sharing knowledge & giving expert opinion into a dangerous area that really doesn't need to be documented on an open forum.

I very much respect the knowledge of these fine gentlemen and I appreciate their time sharing it with us. However, a line was crossed into territory that is detrimental to all M305 owners, even all gun owners, in Canada and I reported the posts.

There's no need for some kind of mutiny or witch hunt. It's in everyone's best interests that this thread gets back on track to the topic of MIM bolts and cast receivers.

Fair enough.

Any other identifiable things M305 owners can be looking out for?

I don't care to see suppression of information on the site. That's where I stand.

Totally agree, but at the end of the day it's GT's private forum and we are all guests here, even the paid advertising guests lol.
There is a blog review of a 2012 M305 you can see pictures of what we were talking about. I mean it's only been up there for nearly 7 years and nothing has come of it...it is also the first hit when you google "m305 review".
But don't talk about it here...lol.

IBTL time?

Wow. Flawless logic. Something illegal flew under the radar a few years ago so it's fair game to discuss in an open forum?

You have no consideration for owners of rifles that were not part of the batch in question?

Better than the logic that suggests that a guy who makes rifle accessories wants to see those same rifles "melted down".

Frankly I am not sure how much your alerting mods had to do with the issues in this thread, so stay calm. You have not been personally attacked.

I like freedom, whether its to do with guns or speech.

You know damn well there is not a word in that blog that mentions what was being discussed here. There may be a blurry picture that someone very experienced could maybe draw a conclusion from but that is all. Apples and oranges.

you entirely missed the point of all of my posts in this thread

has anyone tested one of the receivers that is cast or one that has metaleurigical repairs done to it (for any reason) ? I think not.
No one is trying to expose some deep dark secret..... these receivers , and the receiver of ANY firearm that has obvious and out of the ordinary blemishes and flaws should be something we can discuss without some paranoid people assuming someone is trying to be a whistle blower LOL

her no evil, see no evil, say no evil..... I get it, probably better than most.

K I'm really done this time hahaha

be safe fellow nutters.

Well....to summarize, the Nork 14's to ask for more detailed pics of so you can decide whether you want headaches or not:
2012 to 2014, reshaped heels, porous material under right side rail, signs of weld repairs that can result in out of spec receivers.
2014 and on, MIM bolts...have 10 circle sprues on underside of bolt, black in appearance vs parkerized grey. Cast receivers with casting line down the middle, softer orange peel texture with little sign of machining marks.
Ideally, nobody would buy a new one of these due to the high failure rate and poor quality. The importer NS would be stuck with them, which is fine, because they don't care about your safety anyway.

You choose to be a whistle blower when you openly document this information in a public forum.

We're all aware of your vast knowledge of the platform. Do you really need to flex your ego responding to Hitzy's rust repair bait?

This is my final input on this topic, so don't get all upset and run to report me to mom and dad.

Any time we see forged receivers with welding on them, for any reason, we should be asking ourselves some things:

1) are they still safe? Do we trust them not to fail?
2) are they still reliable? Are they warped?
3) why are they being sold as "new" without these alterations disclosed?
4) why was the welding necessary? As a consumer, am I paying to own someone's mistake?

When marstar sold guns like this with unsafely welded parts, it ended them on cgn. This is no different, or at least it should not be.

Now couple that with documented unsafe MIM bolts, cast receivers of unknown quality in an unforgiving and high chamber pressure platform...

I simply don't care if tinfoil hats think that saying these things will get rifles banned. I don't want dead or maimed shooters on my conscience because I stood silent. Do you?

The Remington 700 wasn't banned when it was unsafe, nevermind all similar built actions. If a batch of m14 clones is unsafe it should be recalled. Period. Not all m14 clones, just the bad ones, which a blind chimp can pick out with 2 minutes of instruction in what to look for.

That's it. I'm done. Good luck to everyone who would rather safety and importer liability not be discussed.

That went sideways.....

I started this thread, outside of my sub forum, to “get the word out” on what I consider a serious safety issue.

Please, let’s keep this thread on track. All the back and forth isn’t helping anyone get the info they need before making a purchase.

All that said, I believe this also needs to be said.....

If it wern’t for guys like Barney and Thomas, (if you don’t know who they are don’t ask), I would have given up on this platform long before I became hopelessly addicted. It was their posts, their stickies and their willingness to hold my hand via PMs, email, phone calls and their willingness to host clinics that inspired me to delve deeper into the platform. My wife hates them for it, and I have an unrepayable debt to both these guys for it. If M14 Doctor was still in business I wouldn’t be here, I’m only here because someone else left a void when they left, and I felt compelled to carry on the torch.

Great post John, agreed! And yes, thanks to Thomas and Barney for feeding all our addictions. We all wouldn't be here without you. See, it's all your fault!hahahaha! :)

Just for the amount of stuff he's done for free to get people up and running for peanuts, barney was (and is) "the man". I helped out at his clinic once and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

I'm interested in knowing what realistic expectations are for these MIM bolts. Every gun is different, but what are the statistics? 100, 500, 1000, 2000 shots fired and how many are breaking? 5%, 20%, 50%? What happens when the lug breaks? Is it a jam up in the action or do parts fly everywhere?

if a lug breaks when you are firing it you could be

Lucky :) or

: ( or .( or ( ... you could be called 3 finger .... or one eyed ... bob

65000 psi is normal pressure ........what happens if you have a hot load ... 75000 psi .... or higher

have you heard about the tire test..

put it in a tire and pull the trigger with a long string... standing behind a big tree

cheers John , thx man.
Being 'M14doctor' was fun times but got to be too much for me in the long run.
yer good people , M14 nuts are in good hands with your services availlable to them.
I can't apologize for my contribution to the 'sideways' nature the thread took , it was a matter of commenting on glaring safety issues vs how it was perceived by certain folks who are a lil paranoid in my opinion.
When people start perceiving my stance on things and my direct manner of addressing issues and expressing my knowledge as having something to do with my ego or that I get off on people praising my name.... it is truly disappointing. Anyone who thinks that I feel I walk on clouds because I can build accurate M14 rifles in my sleep sadly never took the time to actually know me. This has been my plight since I first made myself known on CGN and still continues to this day.
So I'm done being that guy.
that said.... if you have been around a while and really need to reach out, I usually answer m14 questions by pm.
