There is a public road in northern BC I would like to use it as it is a public road. It ends with a co-op that owns the property one both sides of the road and is used for trailer and cabins however they do not own the road itself. the road is %100 public. I would like to park at the end of the road to scout a area past their property. Can they stop me and ask me my business or ask me to sign in. I see no reason to give them any information as I have a right to use any public road I choose in BC. Can anyone clarify my rights for me.

are you 100% positive its a public road?

There is a road on our property that "looks" like a public rd. Its attached to a public Rd. it has a proper stop sign. It even shows up on Goggle maps.

But its a private Rd. We are responsible for its maintenance and can lock the gate at any time for any reason. i can tell you to leave if i don't like you :)

I was stopped on the Big Bar Lake road 2 weeks ago right at the Little Big Bar lake turn off.
Guy and wifey stopped and asked if I'm OK ?? Then asked what am I doing here???
Not worth starting a #### show over people looking out for each other..
And they don't get many strangers back there..
Be nice ..

Make sure it is public. Show up with a box of beer or some donuts and get to know the cabin and trailer owners. They might even tell you the good hunting spots life is better going through it making new friends then trying to make enemies. If that dosn't work what is wrong with signing in no one says you have to sign in with your real name but I'm sure they would know your plate number on your truck anyways as you drive through. If its public your taxes pay to maintain it so you should have access to use it.

if someone showed up and said "im pretty sure there is public land over there that i was planning on accessing, can you confirm that i have boundaries correct and im not trespassing on private property" it would go really far.

As mentioned, it may not be a public road. It sounds like the co-op owns the property on both sides of the road right up to the end and probably beyond. This may be a private road to access the co-op property. How do you plan to access the area beyond the co-op without crossing their land? They have every right to ask you to sign in to be allowed on their property or to deny you access. Northern BC is mostly wilderness with unlimited public access to areas larger than Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI combined. Maybe you could broaden your search a little?

The Douglas Lake cattle ranch has their land posted on either side of the Penasack Lake FSR up till KM 29?? up from Nicola Lake..
So I'm thinking if it's private or leased grazing it should be posted
But the road is public..
Same as access to Minnie Lake ..it took a big court case to allow public access

A lot of regional districts in BC have online GISs (geographical information systems) where you can pull up things like land ownership and see it on a map. That would be the first place I checked if I wanted to identify what is and isn't private property.

Good advice, I’ve saved the maps onto my phone from our regional district. It’s pretty helpful, the other option would be to pop in to your regional district office and get them to confirm if it’s a public road or not. I’ve talked to them before when I’ve been looking for info on certain areas/properties and they’re always helpful, at the least they’ve been able to advise me on who I need to contact about getting more information after they helped me as much as they were allowed.

There is no dispute over the road being public, I do not have to cross any private land. They simply believe because the road runs thru their co-op ending at a creek they can deny public the right to use the road. I believe that I can use any public road in bc if I am not breaking any laws, but if I am wrong I want to know.

If it’s a public road or a legal easement for say an fsr you have every right to use it, talk to the regional district or ministry and they will confirm.

We have a guy in town that thinks he can tell hunters they are trespassing on his property when they access the fsr, he will swear at you and tell you that it’s private property but there’s nothing he can do.

There’s a legal easement through his property providing public access to the fsr and crown land a couple hundred yards beyond his property, he just hates hunters. He told me he was going to put up a gate two years ago, I’m still waiting for him to put it up haha. Part way up the fsr is some of the best grouse hunting around, I don’t think he’s figured out that I live in town yet and that I know I have every right to use the road for access.

If you can find the B.C. property assessment map, it shows the borders or perimeters of land and their values.
Now if I can only figure out how to lay it over the Google Earth maps I'd be in business.
There is a farmer down yawnder that he too thinks he owns the planet.
Mizzerable cuss.

For about five years I tried to get access to a road considered public and after all that effort turns out I’m not able. Their lease (large mining co) surrounds the road, in my case, rendering any use not by the lease holder illegitimate in the government’s eyes. Suppose it would be legal to travel the road, but can’t stop and engage in activities. Doesn’t mean you’re facing the same situation, just that the road being public on its own may not be enough.

I am not a cuss! :)
Or someone else?

iMapBC interactive map, is another site worth looking over, the interface is pretty clunky, but you can pick and choose between dozens of different data layers and custom make printable maps with all sorts of useful data, ranging from ownership boundaries, through multiple different air photo runs in a given area.

I have a property with an easement along one side....it may look like a road...but it can legally only be used by the owner of the property behind mine for access...nobody else.....make sure it is not an "easement" access

Is that the one where it was a dude in a dress, sleeping off a hangover, wakes up to another dude with his tongue down his throat? :D LOL!
And something about tossing dwarves?

need to check the map... there are road allowances. They're set aside on private property for roads. So a public access road can go through private property.

If it is a private road the owner is allowed to put a gate on it to keep people out. Anyone who owns a private road and don't want people trespassing on it generally put a gate on it with no trespassing sign.

If the road is on the road allowance, it is a public road no matter who maintains it.

parking is a separate issue. If there is no road side parking, you would be parking on private property and would need the owner's permission.
