Puma lever guns...

I'm on the fence about acquiring a .44 mag lever at the moment.

.30-30 is much more common (Walmart and CanTire) but from the research I've done it looks like once you have the brass it's much cheaper to reload .44 mag then .30-30.

Can anyone second that?

Also is .44 mag the same dimensions as a .44 spl in all aspects except for case length?
yes, that's right- i can't find my reolading manual right now, but i pay about 60 bucks/1000 for 44 bullets, and use about 10 grains of 231-compare that against your 30-30 and you'll see it's a LOT cheaper- but my carry in my hands in a 308 win- the 44 mag is a back-up in a 16 inch trapper- short range to about 100 only

The 30/30 has more energy at 100 yards than the .44 Rem Mag has at the muzzel, and with the Puma which is a short cartridge reciever a .45 Colt would be great!

And the 45 Colt can be loaded heavy and slow (a good bear killer)!

Bob:)

If you shoot cast bullets in the 44 mag, it's a very economical round.
But the 30-30 can also shoot cast at full velocity, and that makes reloading it quite cheap too.
The 30-30 will always be a bit more expensive, because it uses 3X the powder.
But, if you shoot jacketed bullets out of the two, they are closer in price to reload.
Given a choice between the 357 and the 44, I'd take the 44. The 357 will do the job, the 44 just does it better.

I have a 16inch .454 and I find it quite pleasant to shoot.

With what loads?

Most reports say a 16inch .454 is a serious handful? They were even having trouble keeping the mag tube from ripping out of the receiver on the first generation of those.

But I want one - so I'm listening.

They also produce one in 480 Ruger. .475", slightly less powerful than the Casull for less recoil but still more than the 44.
