Hello I am selling my semi auto to free up some money for another project. I realize I will have to replace it eventually with another shotgun. I love my Beretta but due to money I will most likely have to replace it down the road with a Pump.

My plan is to keep my eyes peeled for a nova or a browning BPS.

I do not use my shotguns much..and when I do it is for birds ...I don't do any range ( skeet ) shooting.

My question is For a hunting pump shotgun are the nova and BPS the front runners ? Is there a less expensive gun that is just as good / better for my intended use ?

You can easily get by with a 870 express. Not as smooth as a bps or 870 wingmaster but goes boom when you pull the trigger and is economical.
I would buy one that is 3 1/2 and camo since they sell quick if you ever want to part with it.

If your a lefty, go for the Browning. Quaility, fit and finish will be very good!

The Remington has a steel reciever, not alloy. This extra weight seems to help a little bit with recoil compared to my Mossberg 500 or Nova Tactical. My Mossberg 835 is a dream to shoot with the backboard and ported barrels. Mossberg barrels also cost a lot less than Remington and the Beneli barrels are very expensive

The new Weatherby pump I won does not impress me at all. Go to the store and try a few guns on and see how they fit!

Thanks for the replies. I like the Mossberg's and am a fan of tang safety guns...But I do not like the ported barrels and they are pretty much all equipped with the ported barrels these days. The 835 is an option I have not considered and will have to look into. Remington has been putting out some really cheaply made stuff lately and this has me worried about the quality of a new 870...I guess I will have to get out and Handel one in the store to see if they are still as solid as they once were. The 877 looks like it may be a good all weather alternative as well.

I have actually shot pretty much all the guns discused with the exception of a BPS..In fact I have never even picked one up before. I guess I should head out to a local shop and get my hands on one.

This has been helpfull so far. I am pleased to see that there is no one gun that everyone is advising me to aviod

The BPS is far superior in Quality and overall Finnish to most mentioned smooth fast action would make a fine shotgun for someone that can appreciate quality and workmanship/

Yeah I agree. The Browning BPS Upland with straight grip and factory engraving I use to own was perfect. Polishing and bluing was beautiful. Not a machine, buff or toll mark anywhere on the gun. Slick as butter......but I hated the straight grips stock. Very uncomfrotable for me to shoot.

So I trade in for a mint model 29-2

The two are exactly identical except the ComforTech system. It does make a difference especially when shooting 3.5" loads.

Yes, the bps and the nova are front runners.

The nova and the super nova are not exactly identical. The ComforTect system is not the only difference. With the nova the reciever and the butt stock are all one unit. With the super nova the butt stock is more conventional and is separate from the reciever. The super has a system of shims that will allow cast adjustemnt and the raising or lowering of the comb to fit the shooter.

I think that the best bang for the buck and my choice would be the bps.

Mossberg pumps are a great bang for you buck if you ask me. They arent the nicest shotgun in the world, but it functions in every way you would expect a shotgun to. You point it at little birdy's head, pull the trigger, and it goes bang.

They are fairly simply in design and feild stripping is an easy chore. The only complaints I have are that the forend (part ya pump with) has a little rotational play around the tube magazine, and the camo paint around the tube mag is starting to rub off due to some excessive pumping:D

If i was to buy another pump and had the money I would definately try out a benelli supernova or nova.

I just sold my Weatherby PA-08 to buy a Beretta semi but I really liked the weatherby. It's no Browning but I thought it was nicer than the remington.

why not buy a used Wingmaster? lots of them for sale on the EE for under $400. Once you buy a new and shoot it once it is used anyway.

Yes if one can get a wingmaster with choke tubes for under $400, it would be the way to go. The truth is that most wingmasters under $400 do not have choke tubes and should be priced around $200.
