Purchasing 9mm - what do you shoot and why?

Sig X-5 and X-6 Mastershop's (German imports direct).... expensive but there is no question what the shortcomings in the groupings downrange are from - triggers and actions are like glass

Finally took the Norinco NZ85B to the range yesterday. Big shoutout to Jimbo14 for swapping the recoil spring and main spring out for slightly lighter ones and the additional coaching. The trigger feels great and I was shooting pretty consistent 2 inch groups at 5 yards (with the odd outlier). This one is a keeper and well worth the money. It's a huge improvement over the Girsan MC28 I had.

Best 9mm for the money... ever. Mine is a forever gun!

RK99,
Don't compliment jimbo14 too much! He gets too cocky after!

I heard about your 2" groups! Glad you got your shooting sorted out. Keep it up. It's a perishable skill, especially early in your career.

Lol! OK, I'll try not to compliment him too much. :d I'll try to keep going to the range regularly. Life is busy and multiple hobbies call. But I do want to work on the skills.

All depends on what type of shooting (match, 3 gun, etc.) you want to do plus finding a 9mm that fits you hand like it was made for you. Because I have large hands I have to get a custom grip made for my Glock 34 9mm. At the moment I'm trying to talk a good friend of mine to CNC or 3D print a custom one. With my hands (loosely) gripping the gun my trigger finger when bent is still about 3/4" in front of the trigger guard.

I am really enjoying shooting the 9mm sig Sauer p320 rx right now. First time having a red dot optic which really helps me with the prism effect my prescription glasses have on open sights.

You're very welcome!

It's amazing what happens when you aren't fighting the trigger. Keep up your great practicing and you'll do very well.

Quiet you! At least someone listens to me. lol!

I was recently in the same boat and ended up choosing a Smith and Wesson M&P9 2.0 range kit. Fit the hand well, came with 3 mags, holsters, and a mag loader (which has saved my fingers from becoming bloody and raw!), and now that I've had it out a few times, has been 100% reliable. I'm really happy with it, especially for the price.

Now I just need to get out more and practice! This handgun game is a whole new animal compared to my usual shotgun sports and rifle shooting.

M&p9 2.0

Grip is excellent, eats anything and reasonably priced, especially when on sale.

EDIT: Reading thru some of the pages, I saw you have a pretty good budget. I must say I really like my s&w and it really is a totally different feel, but my father's CZ shadowline is a beast. Almost hard not to shoot good with this one.

I shoot a Glock 19 gen 3

I'm one of those who happen to have a good fit with the Glock angle grip.

Lots of parts both OEM and aftermarket available. Magazines are plentiful and can be found almost anywhere guns are sold.

Only mod I have on it: finger grooves removal and trigger undercut. I may or not change the sights in 2020 and maybe a trigger, but they run fine stock.

I started with a P226, bought a Glock 17, sold the 226, bought the Glock19, sold the 17 :p

My vote goes to a 1911, or a cz75 shadow. I'd also like to try a cz tactical sport, a bit longer barrel than a shadow and single action only. I've shot a couple shadows and the double action first shot was really weird for me. Plus, or maybe a minus, you can buy a dirt cheap 1911 and play gunsmith, and not feel too bad if you mess something up.

If I were to do it again I would go sig 320, for striker fired, and be happy with it, if I were to go hammer fired sig 226 or 92sf leaning more to the beretta, just because the 226 s are way to
Expensive

9mm off the bench all steel...."T" series BHP, S&W 929 Jerry Miculek (with lots of moon clips)
For Holster, Run&Gun work...Glock17. No external safeties to mess with and great for intuitive shooting.

I started with S&W MP9 2.0 and love it. Also tried a bunch of Glocks and also a Sig P320 which I loved also. I went with the MP as my friend has the Sig and we usually go shooting together.

Try as many as you can and go with the most comfortable option!

New to the restricted side of guns. Looking to purchase a 9mm hand gun to start. There seems to be many brands and models to choose from. What do you have and what do you like about it? It’s had to do a great comparison before buying. I hope you can share your thoughts to help me narrow it down. Thanks for your time.

Ken what do you want your handgun to allow you to do? Range toy? Action shooting? Competitions? What's your budget? <$500, >$500 , >$1,000>$2,000? Makes a difference as to what you might want to buy? We have had the knee jerk suggestions, buy a Shadow2 cause I did, buy a Glock cause I did...my gun is reliable buy this one, forget everything else buy this one. If you want some informed opinions it helps to know what you intend to do with the gun.

Here is a tip: 99.9% of all pistols made today are dead nuts reliable and will certainly be capable of more accuracy than you are capable of. It applies to any gun retailing over $500 and probably applies to most under that amount. Your purchase starts with what you want to do with the gun then how much you want to spent for the whole package. There are folks here who can give you good advice within the parameters you set.

My bet is you will buy the gun that fits best in your hand with sights you can see well. You have a bit of a journey though to get to that gun. Good luck.

Take Care

Bob

Currently just a HK USP-SD and P7M13, both in 9mm. The USP is definitely my work horse and sees a lot more use.
